The scene was broadcast to thousands of fans still inside the New Jersey stadium who applauded in support despite the outcome. Although the final did not go his way, Messi’s performance throughout the tournament showed flashes of his old brilliance. At 39, he outplayed many younger opponents, guiding Argentina all the way to the championship match.
Argentina struggled to break down Spain’s defense, and Messi’s only shot in the final came deep into extra time. It was clear his World Cup journey is nearing its end, but the exact moment when that will happen remains uncertain.
What Has Messi Said About Playing in 2030?
Messi kept fans guessing about his future leading up to the 2026 World Cup, delaying confirmation of his participation until the last moment. He later admitted he had planned his route through the tournament for over a year. This time, his stance appears more open.
“I don’t know,” Messi said earlier this summer. “The truth is, I’m not thinking about that right now. It seems a bit far off but, as I said, I’m living one day at a time and focused on the present. I will continue for some time, as long as I can contribute, feel good physically, and help my teammates ... I will keep playing.”
He joked about his career resembling a video game, where each match unlocks new levels. “I already completed [the game] at the last World Cup,” he smiled. “That’s it. The game is over. I’m done.”
Following the 2026 final, Messi remained silent about his next steps, leaving the door open but unclear.
Coach Scaloni on Messi’s Future
Lionel Scaloni, who coached Messi at Argentina, recalls their first meeting in 2005 when Messi was sent off within seconds of his debut. Scaloni made it clear that Messi is pacing himself.
“Messi is 39 years old, it’s incredible,” Scaloni said after the 2026 final. “He was very clear that he was going to play as long as he wants. I hope people are proud of their team, of what they’ve done. He’s the best soccer player to ever step onto a pitch.”
When asked about how long Messi might continue, Scaloni laughed and said, “What do I know? Ask him. I don’t have the faintest idea, to be honest. He doesn’t stop surprising us.”
When Might Messi Retire?
Even if 2026 marks Messi’s last World Cup, fans won’t have to wait long to see him play again. He remains under contract with MLS club Inter Miami through 2028. While that contract ends before the next World Cup, it may encourage him to stay active enough to represent Argentina at the 2028 Copa América, possibly held in the U.S.
The 2030 World Cup will be hosted mainly by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco. Matches will also take place in Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina itself. Given Messi’s deep ties to Spain and Argentina, FIFA’s setup might tempt him to extend his international career well into his 40s.
