World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage: Format and Seeding Explained

The 2026 World Cup is set to be the largest ever, with 48 teams competing across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This expansion introduces a new Round of 32 knockout stage, doubling the number of teams advancing beyond the group phase compared to previous tournaments.

Who Advances to the Knockouts?

A total of 32 teams will move on from the group stage: the top two finishers in each of the 12 groups, plus the eight best third-placed teams. This leaves 16 teams eliminated after the groups conclude.

As of June 23, six teams have already secured spots in the Round of 32:

  • Mexico (Group A) - Group winners
  • United States (Group D) - Winners over Australia
  • Germany (Group E) - Back after early exits in 2018 and 2022
  • France (Group I) - 2018 champions moving smoothly
  • Argentina (Group J) - Reigning champs led by Lionel Messi
  • Norway (Group I) - Returning after 28 years

The remaining teams will be decided after the group stage ends on June 27, including the battle for the best third-place spots.

Determining the Bracket

The knockout bracket won’t be reshuffled after the group stage. Where a team finishes in its group decides its exact place in the Round of 32, according to a pre-set FIFA template fixed before the tournament begins.

The initial draw in December 2025 split the 48 teams into four pots of 12 based on FIFA rankings. The three host nations were seeded at the top of their groups. The strongest teams were kept apart to avoid early clashes.

Once groups conclude, winners, runners-up, and qualifying third-place teams slot into specific knockout fixtures predetermined by FIFA. Group winners get a theoretically easier path as a reward. The eight best third-place teams face group winners, with matchups decided through a combination table published before the competition started. There’s no second draw or reseeding.

Knockout Phase Structure

The knockout rounds are simple single-elimination matches: win to advance, lose and you’re out. Ties after 90 minutes lead to 30 minutes of extra time, then penalties if needed.

The knockout rounds break down like this:

  • Round of 32: 32 teams, 16 matches
  • Round of 16: 16 teams, 8 matches
  • Quarter-finals: 8 teams, 4 matches
  • Semi-finals: 4 teams, 2 matches
  • Final and third-place play-off: 2 matches

There are 32 knockout games in total, part of a 104-match tournament — 40 more than the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The final will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 PM ET. For the first time, the final will include a live halftime show, adding a new dimension to the event. Matches will take place across 16 stadiums spanning three countries.
