World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Update: France, Argentina, Norway Join USA, Mexico, Germany in Round of 32

The 2026 World Cup knockout stage is taking shape as two of the host nations, United States and Mexico, have already secured top spots in their groups. Alongside them, teams like Germany, Argentina, France, and Norway have also booked their places in the Round of 32.

A total of 32 teams will move on after the group phase. The first and second place finishers in each group advance automatically, along with the eight best third-place teams across all groups.

Tiebreaker Rules According to FIFA

If teams are level on points, rankings will be decided using several steps:

  • Points earned in matches among the tied teams
  • Goal difference in those matches
  • Number of goals scored in those matches

If this doesn’t resolve the tie, further criteria include overall goal difference, total goals scored, and team conduct scores based on yellow and red cards. Should teams still remain tied, FIFA’s world rankings at the time will determine placement.

Qualified Teams and Upcoming Matches

  • United States: Secured Group D by beating Paraguay and Australia, with one match left against Türkiye. They will face a third-place team from Groups B, E, F, I, or J on July 1 at Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara.
  • Mexico: Won Group A with clean sheets against South Africa and South Korea. Their knockout game is June 30 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City versus a third-place team from Groups C, E, F, H, or I.
  • Germany: Advanced by winning against Curaçao and Ivory Coast. They clinched Group E after Ecuador and Curaçao drew. Germany faces a third-place team from Groups A, B, C, D, or F on June 29 in Boston.
  • Argentina: Secured Round of 32 after defeating Austria, with another group match against Jordan pending. Their next match is July 3 in Miami against the runner-up from Group H.
  • France and Norway: Both qualified by winning matches against Iraq and Senegal. They will battle for Group I’s top spot on Friday in Boston, which could affect their seeding and knockout route.

Teams Already Eliminated

  • Haiti: Returning to the World Cup for the first time since 1974, Haiti lost their opening games to Scotland and Brazil without scoring. Their final match will be against Morocco.
  • Türkiye: Expected to contend in Group D but suffered defeats to Australia and Paraguay, knocking them out early. They will face the US in Los Angeles as a group winner despite elimination.
  • Tunisia: After a heavy loss to Sweden, the team changed coaches but could not recover, losing to Japan 4-0 and exiting the tournament.
  • Jordan: Lost their chance for advancement after Algeria beat them. Their last group match will be against defending champion Argentina.

FIFA's New Knockout Bracket Setup

This World Cup features a modified knockout bracket designed to keep the highest-ranked group winners apart until the semifinals. For instance, Spain (ranked No. 1) and defending champions Argentina (No. 2) are placed in opposite pathways. Likewise, France (No. 3) and England (No. 4) are separated, ensuring these top four teams won’t face off until later rounds if they continue winning.
