As the group stage nears its final matches, several key players risk missing the Round of 32 if they pick up another yellow card. What's Different in 2026?

FIFA has introduced new rules for dismissals: players can be sent off for covering their mouths during disputes or leaving the field intentionally to protest a referee’s decision. VAR can review and overturn mistaken red cards or wrongful second yellows.
Can Players Be Suspended for Round of 32 Because of Yellow Cards?
Yes. Since cards reset after the group stage, a player with one yellow card will start the knockout rounds clean—unless they get a second caution in their final group game. That second yellow in the last group match leads to a suspension for the first knockout game. Players with a single yellow entering the final group fixture must avoid further bookings to keep their Round of 32 spot.
Any red card or second yellow in the final group match results in an immediate ban for the Round of 32. After the group phase ends, every player begins the knockout rounds with no yellow card risk.
