Xabi Alonso Expects Enzo Fernandez to Play Against Luton in Carabao Cup

Xabi Alonso expects Enzo Fernandez to be part of Chelsea’s squad against Luton in the Carabao Cup, even as Manchester City circle with growing intent.

The Chelsea head coach confirmed the midfielder is in his plans for Thursday night’s second-round tie at Stamford Bridge, despite the increasing likelihood of a formal approach from City before the transfer window closes on September 1.

“Yes, so we expect that he's involved,” Alonso said. “He has trained, he's training really well, he's a good professional and he will be involved.”

Fernandez’s situation has become one of the defining stories of Chelsea’s window. The Argentina international has been open about his desire to leave, yet continues to train as normal and was brought off the bench in Monday’s 3-2 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage. His introduction drew a split reaction: boos from some sections, applause from others, underlining just how divided the fanbase has become over his future.

City’s interest remains live and serious. The pursuit is being driven by their head coach Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with Fernandez during his time in charge at Chelsea and knows the midfielder’s qualities first-hand.

“We want to have the best team possible. We know his qualities. He has shown it and we have to wait, but we will think about tomorrow and let's see how things develop,” he said when asked if he wanted to keep Fernandez.

Pressed on whether any sale would be dependent on Chelsea securing an adequate replacement, Alonso refused to lay down any hard conditions.

“It is always about understanding the context, the situation, timings, circumstances, so there is not a defined rule for everything,” the Spaniard said. “You need to know how things have worked, what you want, what you want for the future, so I don't have the rules in stone. We need to assess each situation.”

For now, that assessment leads to one clear conclusion: as long as he is still a Chelsea player, Enzo Fernandez remains in Alonso’s plans — and in the spotlight — with City watching closely as the clock ticks towards deadline day.
