Xabi Alonso Seeks Clarity on Enzo Fernández's Future

Xabi Alonso wants the Enzo Fernández saga off his desk – and quickly.

With Manchester City weighing up a fresh move for the Argentina international, the Chelsea head coach admitted he is waiting, like everyone else, for a definitive answer on the midfielder’s future.

Fernández has lived the summer on a knife-edge. Early in the window he was strongly linked with Real Madrid, only for the European champions to cool their interest and step away from the noise. That opened the door for Enzo Maresca’s City, who have identified the 23-year-old as a prime target for their evolving midfield.

Chelsea tried to take control. The club set a clear deadline two weeks ago for any suitor to meet their £120m valuation. City let that date slide without testing the Blues’ resolve, but fresh reports now suggest the Premier League champions are preparing to come back with a bid anyway, deadline or not.

For now, Fernández is back in blue and back in the fold. He has rejoined full training and featured in Alonso’s first Premier League match in charge, named among the substitutes before coming on in the 65th minute of Monday night’s 3-2 win. It was a small but telling sign: as long as he is here, he plays.

Asked after the final whistle whether Fernández will still be his player by the end of the window, Alonso could not offer any guarantees, only a manager’s blunt realism.

“In football, I am not surprised by anything,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”

The message was clear. Alonso wants certainty – City must now decide whether they are willing to pay for it.

While Fernández dominates the headlines, Chelsea’s wider strategy is shifting firmly towards outgoings in the final stretch of the window. Liam Delap is in talks over a move to Nottingham Forest, while Mamadou Sarr is also edging towards the exit. Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Guiu are expected to follow, either on loan or permanent deals, as the club trims a swollen squad and raises funds.

Dario Essugo has been made available for a loan as well, another indication that Chelsea are ready to clear space and cash for the next phase of Alonso’s rebuild.

Whether that next phase includes Enzo Fernández now rests, more than ever, on Manchester City’s next move.
