Yan Diomande Chooses Real Madrid Over Liverpool: A Transfer Story
Yan Diomande never saw Liverpool in his dreams. Not really.
Real Madrid’s new forward has made it clear his heart was set elsewhere all along, despite Liverpool coming close with a huge offer that underlined just how hot the race for his signature had become.
According to the Liverpool Echo network, Liverpool were prepared to put £86 million on the table for the RB Leipzig attacker. Leipzig pushed back. Now, the story behind that move is beginning to surface. And it points to one destination that towered above the rest.
Michael Yormark, co-founder of Roc Nation, the agency representing Diomande, lifted the lid on the forward’s thinking.
“Nathan Campbell, Diomande’s agent, sat down with the Ivorian player, and they talked about his dreams and ambitions,” Yormark revealed.
What came next left little room for doubt.
According to Yormark, Diomande told them: “I want to be the best player in the world, I want to win the Ballon d’Or, and I want to win titles, and my biggest dream has always been to play for Real Madrid.”
That line changes the entire narrative. Liverpool’s interest, PSG’s charm, Leipzig’s valuation — all of it becomes background noise to a career plan that had the Santiago Bernabeu at its centre from the start.
Yormark outlined how Roc Nation moved once those ambitions were laid out.
“We had to put in place the right plan to achieve his dream. We built a team around this young player. This deal represents a big moment for all of us too. We took an ambitious young man and turned his ambition into reality,” he said.
Inside the agency, Nathan Campbell played a central role in driving that vision. Campbell, Roc Nation’s head of global talent recruitment in football, described to SportsBoom.co.za just how much the transfer says about Diomande’s character.
“This historic deal with Real Madrid is a testament to the incredible work ethic that Yan possesses,” Campbell said, highlighting the grind behind the glamour.
He did not underplay the scale of the move either.
“We could not be prouder to have contributed to the completion of the biggest transfer deal for an African player in the history of football,” he added.
The numbers are staggering, the stage is enormous, and the message from Diomande’s camp is unmistakable: this was not a lucky break or a late twist. This was the plan — and it always ended in white.
