Youri Tielemans Apologizes to Aston Villa Fans After Controversial Comments

Youri Tielemans has moved quickly to repair his relationship with Aston Villa supporters after comments about joining “a bigger club” in Manchester United sparked a backlash.

The Belgium midfielder, 29, left Villa Park this summer when United activated a £35m release clause in his contract, handing him a five-year deal at Old Trafford. Tielemans had become a key figure in Birmingham after arriving from Leicester City in 2023, racking up 134 appearances and 10 goals across three seasons.

On United’s pre-season tour, he initially struck the right tone, crediting Villa with reviving his career and helping him rediscover his top level. But one extra line lit the fuse.

“Villa put me back to my best level,” he said, before adding: “But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them.”

Those words travelled fast. Many Villa fans read them as a slight on the club that had backed him, and the reaction online was immediate and fierce.

Tielemans did not wait long to respond. Taking to Instagram to address the anger, he issued a clear apology and tried to draw a line under the episode.

“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I’m grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote on Thursday.

“I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future. Wishing the club the best in the future.”

It was a public climbdown from a player who knows exactly how quickly a legacy can be reshaped by a single sentence, especially when you have just swapped claret and blue for one of the most scrutinised shirts in world football.
