Youri Tielemans did not need long to discover that Aston Villa’s recent rise has changed the way the club sees itself.
Barely weeks after sealing a £35 million move to Manchester United, the Belgian midfielder found himself backpedalling in public, forced into an apology after a clumsy remark about the pecking order in English football angered his former supporters.
From praise to a misstep
On United’s pre-season tour, Tielemans was reflecting on his switch to Old Trafford and initially struck the right tone. He credited Villa with helping him rediscover his best level after arriving from Leicester City in the summer of 2023, a spell in which he made 134 appearances, scored 10 goals and laid on 25 assists.

“But there are clubs above Villa, and Manchester United is one of them,” he told reporters.
In another era, that might have passed with a shrug. Not now. Not after Unai Emery’s side lifted the UEFA Europa League last season and finished fourth in the Premier League to book a place in the UEFA Champions League. Villa Park no longer sees itself as anyone’s stepping stone, and the comment landed like a slap.
The reaction from the fanbase was swift and fierce, with many pointing to the club’s recent European trophy and top-four finish as proof that they no longer sit in anyone’s shadow.
Tielemans moves to repair the damage
Sensing the storm, Tielemans moved quickly to address the backlash. Taking to social media, he admitted his mistake and tried to reset the narrative around his exit.
“Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I'm grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote. “I must however admit my mistake and apologise for my choice of words, will be more careful in the future. Wishing the club the best in the future.”
It was a clear attempt to draw a line under the row and underline that, despite his move, he still holds Villa in high regard.
A big move, a bigger stage
The apology comes at the end of a significant summer for the 29-year-old. United triggered a release clause in his Villa contract to bring him to Old Trafford on a five-year deal, a move that ties him to the club until 2031 and signals a major show of faith in his experience and pedigree.
His final season in Birmingham was far from straightforward. Fitness issues dogged him, with calf and ankle problems limiting him to 35 appearances in all competitions. Even so, he remained a central figure in Emery’s midfield, trusted in big domestic and European fixtures as Villa pushed on both fronts.
Now he steps into a different kind of spotlight. At United, every word is amplified, every performance dissected. This early misstep has underlined that reality before he has even kicked a competitive ball for his new club.
World Cup platform, new-season scrutiny
Tielemans heads into the new campaign off the back of a strong summer with Belgium at the World Cup. He helped his country reach the quarter-finals, where they were knocked out by Spain, and stood out individually. His highlight came in the Round of 32, when he scored twice against Senegal in a commanding display.
That tournament reminded everyone of the midfielder who once dominated games for club and country, the player United believe can anchor and elevate their midfield over the coming years.
Now, though, the focus shifts from international stages to club pressure cookers. Both United and Villa are in the final stretch of their pre-season schedules, fine-tuning before the Premier League begins next weekend.
United face AC Milan in their final warm-up, a chance for Tielemans to quieten the noise the only way that really counts at this level: by dictating a game, by letting his football drown out the headlines.
Villa, meanwhile, have their own response to find. Emery’s team slipped to a 2–1 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup, a reminder of how thin the margins are once you step into the elite bracket they have worked so hard to reach.
Their last pre-season test comes against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday, before they open their Premier League campaign away to Brighton on August 23. United start a day earlier, travelling to Hull City on August 22.
By then, the quote will still be remembered at Villa Park. What happens next will decide whether it becomes a footnote to Tielemans’ move, or the line that defines how both sets of supporters view him in this new chapter.
