2. Bundesliga Season Halted Due to Safety Concerns

The new 2. Bundesliga season had barely taken its first breath when it was abruptly cut short in Bochum.

The ball was rolling for just over a quarter of an hour at the Ruhrstadion in the opening match of the 2026/27 campaign when referee Wolfgang Haslberger brought everything to a halt. Not for a foul. Not for technology. For something Bochum knows all too well: a safety issue linked to fan protest.

A banner in the Hertha BSC away section had been draped over an emergency exit gate, prompting concern from stadium officials. Twice, the stadium announcer appealed over the loudspeakers for the obstruction to be removed. Twice, nothing changed.

Haslberger acted. He stopped the game, guided the players toward the touchline and suspended play while the situation was addressed. The noise inside the ground shifted from the usual early-season hum to a restless murmur, eyes turning away from the pitch and towards the away end.

On the field, players waited in small huddles. On the sidelines and near the Hertha block, discussions unfolded between club representatives, security staff and fan groups. The banner stayed up. Then, finally, it didn’t.

After roughly five minutes of interruption, the Hertha supporters relented and took down the protest banner from the emergency exit area. With the access route cleared and safety concerns eased, Haslberger signalled for the restart.

The 2. Bundesliga season could begin again — at the second attempt.
