How the Knockout Stage Works
The tournament now features 48 teams, so the knockout round begins with 32 teams instead of 16. The top two from each group make up 24 spots. Then, the eight best third-place teams also advance to fill the round of 32.
Understanding Tiebreakers
If teams end up tied on points in their group, rankings are decided through this process:
- Points earned in matches among the tied teams.
- Goal difference in matches among those teams.
- Goals scored in matches among the tied teams.
If still unresolved, the next steps consider overall group performance:
- Goal difference in all group matches.
- Total goals scored in all group matches.
- Fair play points based on yellow and red cards.
If no separation occurs, FIFA World Rankings will be used.
Ranking Third-Place Teams
Third-place teams are ranked to find the best eight that advance. This order applies:
- Points earned in all group games.
- Goal difference in all group games.
- Goals scored in all group games.
- Fair play points.
If ties remain, FIFA rankings decide.
