Arsenal Nears Signing of Bruno Guimaraes to Strengthen Title Defence
Arsenal are on the brink of landing Bruno Guimaraes in a deal that underlines exactly where the Premier League champions see themselves now: at the top, and determined to stay there.
The Gunners have agreed a fee with Newcastle for the Brazil midfielder worth around £75million, potentially rising to £80m with add-ons. Once the final details are completed, it will be one of the marquee moves of the window and a direct statement to the rest of the division.
Guimaraes cut short his post-World Cup break to join Newcastle’s pre-season camp in Spain on Monday, flying in from Brazil. He is now expected to depart that training base and head back to the UK to complete his medical and finalise the move.
Arsenal have moved decisively for a player they have tracked for a long time. Guimaraes has agreed a four-year contract running until the summer of 2030 and has already spoken with new manager Mikel Arteta, who is keeping a tight lid on the situation in public.
After Wednesday night’s 3-1 friendly defeat by Real Betis in Dublin, Arteta batted away every attempt to draw him into transfer talk.
“I'm not going to talk about any players who aren't Arsenal players,” he said when asked how significant Guimaraes’ arrival would be for his squad.

Christos Tzolis has already arrived from Club Brugge in a £34m deal, adding direct running and goals from the wing. Illan Meslier has come in on a free transfer after leaving Leeds, bolstering competition in goal. The club have also exercised their option on Piero Hincapie, turning the Ecuador defender’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen into a permanent move for around £34.5m.

And the ambition may not stop with Guimaraes.
The club are ready to move if any opportunity emerges for his Brazil team-mate Vinicius Jr, a pursuit that would rank as the boldest transfer attempt in Arsenal’s history. Vinicius has entered the final 12 months of his Real Madrid contract, a situation that has alerted Europe’s elite.
For now, though, Madrid are fighting hard to close that door. Crunch talks on Wednesday between the club and the player’s representatives are understood to have gone positively, with the LaLiga giants and head coach Jose Mourinho increasingly confident the forward will sign a lucrative extension to stay at the Bernabeu.

Inside the dressing room, the message is clear: this squad wants more. Riccardo Calafiori, speaking after the defeat to Betis, did not shy away from naming names or expectations.
“We are on that level now. We are on top,” the Italian defender told reporters in Dublin. “We want to win the league again and we want to be even better than last season if we can. We need these kind of players, I think.”
Guimaraes fits that description perfectly: a midfielder who can set the tempo, bite into tackles and still find the pass that opens a game.
