2026 Summer Transfer Window: Manchester United and Tottenham Miss the Mark
The Premier League continued its trend of heavy spending during the 2026 summer transfer window. Clubs didn't hold back on new signings, yet some top spenders haven't seen the results they hoped for as the season kicked off.
Key Signings and Early Season Challenges
Manchester United finally started revamping their midfield this summer, but the results so far have been disappointing. Youri Tielemans, arriving from Aston Villa, hasn't met expectations. Carlos Baleba has yet to debut because of an ankle injury. Meanwhile, Brazilian Andrey Santos, brought in from Chelsea to fill Casemiro's shoes, has struggled badly. The 22-year-old featured in losses against Hull City and Brighton & Hove Albion, and his other appearances total just 42 minutes.
United’s midfield still has potential to come together, but with a rocky start to the campaign, time is running out.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Woes at the Bottom
Tottenham Hotspur are currently sitting last after five games, with two draws and three losses. They splashed over €200 million on midfielders Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, once tipped as future top-four contenders. So far, manager Roberto De Zerbi hasn’t found a way to get the best out of these signings. Jan Paul van Hecke has also struggled, showing poor defensive awareness and raising questions about the decision to trade Luka Vuskovic for him.
Brighton and Brentford Stand Out With Smarter Moves
Brighton & Hove Albion took advantage of Tottenham’s missteps by signing Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic. Although he never appeared for Spurs’ first team, his loan spell at Hamburg highlighted his abilities. Since joining Brighton this summer, the 19-year-old has been a regular starter and helped them climb to third place in the league. His versatility across different formations shows Brighton’s knack for wise transfers.
Brentford continue their reputation for spotting talent they can develop and profit from. Mamadou Sangare, signed from Ligue 1 side Lens, made an immediate impact with a dynamic performance that left Tottenham’s midfield chasing shadows. It seems United may have missed a chance by not pursuing Sangare.
Other Promising Newcomers
- James Trafford (Leeds United): Has conceded only three goals in five league matches, solidifying Leeds' defense.
- Jeremy Jacquet (Liverpool): Brought much-needed stability to Liverpool’s backline, which was shaky last season.
