Alan Shearer Predicts Guardiola's Next Move After Manchester City
Pep Guardiola’s decade-long reign at Manchester City is edging towards its final act, and one of the Premier League’s greats believes the next chapter is already writing itself.
Alan Shearer expects Guardiola to walk away from the relentless grind of club football this summer, take a breather, and then re-emerge on the international stage.
The Spaniard’s last Premier League game in charge of City is widely expected to come on Sunday against Aston Villa, a fixture that now carries the weight of farewell as much as it does points. Ten years of domination, reinvention and constant pressure may be about to close with a full stop at the Etihad.
Shearer, speaking to Betfair, painted a clear picture of what comes next.
“What lies ahead for Pep Guardiola after City? A break!”
he said, predicting a familiar pattern for a coach who has previously stepped away to recharge. Guardiola famously took time out after leaving Barcelona before launching the next phase of his career.
“I believe it will resemble what we have observed in the past; he might take a year off and then return revitalized and ready to go again,”
Shearer added.
The direction of that return feels obvious to the former England captain. He sees Guardiola swapping the intensity of the club calendar for the different rhythm of international football.
“I can envision him leading an international team; I won’t claim it’s less demanding, but perhaps it won’t be as intense, presenting a different challenge for him.”
Guardiola has already been linked with the Brazil national team job in recent years, a role that would marry his obsession with positional play to a nation steeped in attacking flair. No move has materialised, but the speculation has never fully disappeared.
What seems more certain is the succession plan at City. It has been widely reported that former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is set to replace Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium, inheriting a machine built in the image of one of the game’s most exacting minds.
So the picture forming is stark. One era ending in Manchester. Another, potentially, waiting on the international stage. The only question now is which country will hand Guardiola the next canvas.
