Alonso Acknowledges Caicedo Mistake After Arsenal Loss
Chelsea walked out against Arsenal on Sunday without one of their key pillars in midfield, and their manager knows exactly why.
Mauricio Alonso has openly accepted he rushed Moisés Caicedo back too soon, a decision that came back to bite Chelsea in the build-up to their 2-1 Premier League defeat to their London rivals.
Caicedo’s stop-start season took another twist after what was supposed to be a positive return. The Ecuadorian had already sat out the league opener against Fulham and the League Cup win over Luton Town, watching from the sidelines while his teammates tried to build early momentum without him.
His comeback finally arrived in a wild, breathless victory over Brighton. It should have been a straightforward step in his recovery. Instead, it turned into a warning.
Brought on in the 68th minute for Pedro Neto, Caicedo barely had time to find his rhythm. Fourteen minutes later, he was limping off, clearly in discomfort, his night over almost as soon as it had begun. Summer signing Valentin Barco was thrown on in his place, and with that, Caicedo’s hopes of facing Arsenal disappeared.
The Brighton setback ruled him out of the high-stakes clash at the weekend, and after the narrow loss to Mikel Arteta’s side, Alonso did not hide from his part in the story.
“It is not longer term but it’s about assessing the risk,” Alonso said, speaking after the game. “Probably, last week, we took him too early and I don’t want to make the same mistake again.”
That line cut through the usual post-match noise. No deflection. No attempt to dress it up. Alonso knows Chelsea need Caicedo, but he also knows they cannot afford to break him in September.
He refused, though, to let the injury narrative become a shield for the defeat. Arsenal edged it, and Alonso was clear: Chelsea had enough on the pitch to do more.
“It’s easy after defeats to talk about the players that you are missing,” he said. “I’m not going to go there, I am happy with the players that we have.
“For sure all the managers need to deal with injuries, with suspensions. To have all the players available for all the games is impossible. But we need [Caicedo and Colwill] because they are top players and with them we are a better team.”
That balance summed up his mood. No excuses, but no pretending either. Caicedo and Levi Colwill change the ceiling of this side, and Alonso knows it.
Now comes a different kind of test. Chelsea move from the intensity of a league showdown with Arsenal to the cut-throat nature of knockout football. Leeds United arrive at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday in the third round of the Carabao Cup, a tie that suddenly carries more weight after a painful league setback.
Will Caicedo be involved? On this evidence, only if Alonso is absolutely convinced the risk has gone.
The manager’s words point to caution, not bravado. Chelsea need their record midfielder for the long haul, not just for one night under the lights in the cup.
