Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti has spoken out about Neymar's retirement from international football, firmly backing his decision to select the veteran forward for the 2026 World Cup. The Italian acknowledged Neymar’s physical struggles but stressed his importance within the squad.

Neymar Ends 16 Years with Brazil

The 34-year-old officially closed a long international career following Brazil’s unexpected round of 16 exit against Norway. Although the campaign ended early, Ancelotti insisted the former Barcelona star deserved his place on the trip to North America.

Physical Issues Caused Frustration

Ancelotti admitted Neymar’s fitness was a concern, mentioning a grade 2 calf strain that kept him out of the group stage matches against Morocco and Haiti. "He didn’t deliver technically as much as hoped because he couldn’t," Ancelotti told ESPN. "But his attitude was very positive. I appreciate him a lot and thanked him for his conduct. Including him in the 26-man squad was the right call."

Despite praising Neymar's leadership behind the scenes, the coach did not hide his disappointment with the player's condition leading up to the tournament. "The only issue was Neymar could have prepared better during the buildup. He should have been ready from game one, not game four," he added.

With Neymar retiring, Ancelotti now plans a major overhaul for Brazil ahead of the 2030 World Cup. The team will shift focus away from the stars of the 2010s toward new talent. "One generation ends, and another must rise—hopefully stronger than before," said the former Real Madrid manager.

Ancelotti also hinted that other senior players might soon retire from international duty. When asked about veterans like Casemiro, Danilo, and Alex Sandro, he responded frankly about the aging squad. "This period is ending. We thank them all; I hold great affection for them. But when players pass 30, we must plan for the future. Some will stay, like Marquinhos. Alisson? We’ll see."
