Andrey Santos Joins Manchester United: Midfield Rebuild Begins

Andrey Santos will walk into Old Trafford as Michael Carrick’s first signing of the summer, but Manchester United insist he is only the start of their midfield rebuild, not the finished article.

United have agreed a £50 million package with Chelsea for the Brazilian, who has grown tired of life in the shadows at Stamford Bridge. Stuck behind Moises Caicedo, his path to regular football in west London never truly opened up. At 22, he wants minutes, responsibility, a stage. United are offering all three.

A New Brazilian, But Not *That* Brazilian

The timing of the deal has inevitably sparked anxiety among United supporters. Casemiro has gone, his contract expired and with it a huge piece of the club’s recent identity in midfield. A serial winner, a dressing-room pillar, and the man who dragged United through some grim afternoons. Replacing that presence is no small task.

So when another Brazilian defensive midfielder arrives, the dots almost connect themselves. But inside the club, they are pushing back against that narrative.

Santos, they believe, is a project with a high ceiling, not a ready-made heir. United were impressed by his spell on loan at Strasbourg, where he showed flashes of the authority and range that first persuaded Chelsea to bring him to Europe. Those “glimpses of promise” have convinced INEOS and Carrick that he can grow into a star.

Yet, as reported by The Athletic, Santos is not the marquee name United have been promising. He is a piece of the puzzle, not the centrepiece.

United Want Two More in Midfield

The recruitment plan is clear: Santos plus two. United still intend to bring in at least two more midfielders this summer, even as one long-running saga threatens to unravel.

A £34m plus add-ons deal for Atalanta’s Ederson has been in place since May, but doubts are creeping in. The club want him to undergo a second medical, and with every delay the prospect of that transfer collapsing grows louder. For a squad that cannot afford another missed window in midfield, the uncertainty is unwelcome.

The urgency is real. United need a commanding figure to stand alongside Kobbie Mainoo next season, someone who can shoulder the burden Casemiro once carried. They are watching options disappear.

United are understood to be in talks with his representatives over a possible switch from AS Roma, exploring whether he can be the dynamic presence they are searching for.

The pattern is obvious. United know they cannot drift into pre-season without that marquee midfielder. They have already watched too many targets slip away, too many windows pass without properly addressing the heart of the team.

Clock Ticking on Carrick’s Midfield

Carrick’s vision is built around control and bravery on the ball. Mainoo is central to that. Santos will be asked to grow into it. But the missing piece – the guaranteed starter, the statement signing – has yet to walk through the door.

Inside Old Trafford, there is no illusion about what comes next. A high-profile midfielder must arrive before pre-season rhythms are set, before Carrick locks in his shape and hierarchy. Whoever United finally land is expected to start, to lead, to stand alongside Mainoo as the spine of a new-look side.
