Antoine Mendy Suffers Serious Knee Injury in Nice vs Le Mans Draw

Nice’s 1-1 draw with Le Mans has come at a far higher price than two dropped points. The club have lost defender Antoine Mendy for months after the Senegal international tore the cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The damage was confirmed on Sunday, when scans backed up the medical staff’s worst fears. Mendy had gone down awkwardly on his left leg during the game and immediately signalled trouble. There was no contact, no crunching tackle. Just a bad landing and a knee that gave way.

He had only just come on, introduced from the bench with around 15 minutes left as Nice chased a winner. Instead of helping to tilt the match, he ended it on the Allianz Riviera turf, in obvious distress and clutching his knee, before being helped off.

Tests revealed a cruciate ligament tear, an injury that will sideline Mendy for several months. The club will only be able to set a more exact return date as his treatment begins and his recovery takes shape, but the verdict is clear: Nice must plan without him for a long stretch.
