Arsenal Prepare for Tough Away Day at Aston Villa
Arsenal are ready to roll out their summer heavyweights on one of the toughest away days of the season.
Mikel Arteta’s side head to Aston Villa on Monday night, and the manager has opened the door for both Ezri Konsa and Bruno Guimaraes to be involved after the pair missed the routine opening-day win over Coventry City.
Konsa primed for reunion
Of the two, Konsa looks closest to a return. The England defender, signed from Villa earlier in the window, has shaken off his issue and is now pushing hard for a place in the squad against his former club.
Arteta didn’t bother hiding his enthusiasm.
“He is training really well and available for selection,” the Arsenal boss said, making it clear Konsa is in the frame to feature back at his old stomping ground.
With William Saliba out and Arsenal’s backline already being reshaped, Konsa’s timing could hardly be better. His familiarity with Villa Park and Unai Emery’s side adds an extra layer of intrigue to Arteta’s defensive puzzle.
Guimaraes handled with care
Guimaraes is a different story, but still an encouraging one for Arsenal.
The Brazilian midfielder, who played in the Community Shield win over Manchester City, has been nursing a minor thigh strain and has been kept out of recent action. Arteta is refusing to cut corners with a player expected to become central to Arsenal’s midfield structure.
“We just managed the last few days with him. He has been out on the pitch doing training sessions. We have just been managing the load. He is potentially available,” Arteta explained.
The message is clear: Guimaraes is close, but Arsenal will not risk a relapse for the sake of one game, however testing the trip to the West Midlands might be.
Timber close, but not close enough
Not everyone will make it.
Jurrien Timber, battling a groin problem, will sit this one out despite encouraging signs behind the scenes. The Dutch defender remains on the brink, but not yet ready to be thrown into the intensity of a Premier League away night.
“Jurrien is progressing really well,” Arteta said. “It is the third week in a row that we have increased his load. If it all goes well, we can step it up next week.”
The plan is clear: steady steps now, full contention in a week or two.
Saliba blow lingers over defence
The real cloud hangs over William Saliba.
The Frenchman has been a pillar of Arsenal’s recent resurgence, yet a persistent back injury has removed him from the equation for what Arteta admits will be a significant spell.
“Willy is going to take a while,” came the blunt verdict.
Without him, Arsenal’s defensive hierarchy is being redrawn on the fly. Gabriel Magalhaes remains the anchor, but the identity of his long-term partner is now a live battle.
Cristhian Mosquera has impressed in the early weeks, stepping in with composure and authority. Now Konsa’s return adds a fresh twist, giving Arteta a different profile of defender and another option as he tries to keep the back line stable without its most imposing presence.
Villa away will offer an immediate examination. And with Konsa and Guimaraes edging into view, Arsenal’s season could hinge on how quickly this reshaped spine finds its rhythm.
