Arsenal's £55m Bid for Bruno Guimarães Rejected by Newcastle
Arsenal have tested Newcastle United’s resolve with a £55 million offer for Bruno Guimarães – and been sent away with a firm no.
Sources have told ESPN Brasil that the bid, worth around $73m, was rejected as Newcastle hold their line over one of the pillars of Eddie Howe’s side. Arsenal, fresh from ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League title, have opened preliminary talks with the Brazilian’s camp and left those conversations believing a deal is not impossible. Not yet, anyway.
Newcastle, though, are adamant. They do not want to sell. With two years remaining on Guimarães’ current contract and more than 150 appearances behind him since arriving from Lyon in 2022, the club view him as central to any attempt to stabilise and push on after a turbulent period on and off the pitch.
That stance is being backed up behind the scenes. Newcastle are pushing to secure Guimarães on a new deal, a move designed both to reward his importance and to shut down the growing noise around his future. The message from St James’ Park is clear: he is not on the market.
Arsenal’s midfield rebuild
Arsenal’s interest underlines how aggressively they plan to strengthen from a position of power. Winning the league has not dulled their ambition; it has sharpened it. Midfield is a key area identified for reinforcement, one of several positions the champions want to upgrade as they prepare to defend their crown, starting against Coventry on opening day.
Guimarães fits the profile Mikel Arteta craves: technically secure, combative, able to dictate tempo and break lines. Arsenal’s willingness to go as high as £55m at this stage of the window signals they are ready to invest heavily again to keep their squad ahead of the chasing pack.
Their gaze is not fixed solely on Tyneside. Arsenal are also keeping a close eye on Sandro Tonali’s situation at Newcastle. The Italy international has admirers across the Premier League, with Tottenham currently pushing harder than anyone for a deal and Manchester City also in the conversation. Arsenal, for now, are watching and waiting.
Newcastle under pressure
Newcastle’s refusal to entertain offers for Guimarães comes against a backdrop of growing pressure on their squad. Anthony Gordon has already departed for Barcelona, a significant blow both in terms of productivity and perception. Several other players are attracting interest, and the club’s hierarchy know that losing another cornerstone would send exactly the wrong signal about their ambitions.
Holding firm on Guimarães, then, is about more than one player. It is about Newcastle’s attempt to show they can resist the market rather than be dictated to by it.
Arsenal’s wider transfer net
At the Emirates, the recruitment drive stretches beyond the North East. The Gunners are tracking Morgan Rogers at Aston Villa, another versatile attacking option who fits the age and style profile of their recent signings.
They also retain a strong interest in Julián Álvarez at Atletico Madrid, as first reported by ESPN in January. His name remains on the list as Arsenal weigh how best to add depth and variety to their forward line for a season that will again be packed with domestic and European demands.
For now, the headline is simple: Arsenal have made their move for Bruno Guimarães and been rebuffed. Newcastle are standing firm. The champions will have to decide whether to walk away, wait, or come back with something that finally tests just how firm that stance really is.
