Guimaraes is the cornerstone of that vision. The 28-year-old Newcastle midfielder is the primary target for the centre of the pitch, and Arsenal already have a full agreement on personal terms lined up. The player is on board.
Newcastle are not.
Unofficial approaches of £55 million and £65 million have been dismissed out of hand at St James’ Park. Arsenal are now preparing a formal £70 million bid, but Newcastle’s stance remains hardline. If that offer is rejected, as widely expected, Arsenal know they cannot afford to waste time.
So they have identified a Plan B: Alex Scott.
According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal have already internally “decided” that the Bournemouth midfielder is the one they will turn to if Guimaraes proves unattainable. At 22, Scott fits the club’s profile of a technically gifted, press-resistant midfielder who can grow with a young core but contribute immediately.
The problem? They are not alone.
Chelsea Move First – and Get Knocked Back
Chelsea have already made their move for Scott. Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that the London club saw an opening offer of £64 million rejected by Bournemouth, but remain “very interested” and are weighing up a second bid.
Bournemouth’s response to that first proposal was firm. They are determined to keep Scott. This is not just about holding on to a promising youngster; it’s about protecting the spine of a side preparing for their first ever European campaign. Losing their most coveted midfielder now would rip a hole in Andoni Iraola’s plans.
Chelsea, though, are unlikely to walk away easily. Scott is admired at the very top of the game. Pep Guardiola once labelled him an “unbelievable player”, while Thomas Tuchel is also known to rate him highly. That kind of endorsement inevitably inflates both the demand and the price.
Chelsea’s recruitment team now face a familiar decision: push the fee higher, or move on. Their first offer has already tested Bournemouth’s resolve. The second will test their valuation.
Bournemouth’s Hard Line – and the Player’s Stance
Publicly and privately, Bournemouth are adamant. Scott is not for sale.
The club have already tried to tie him down to a new and improved contract on the south coast, and they are not keen to lose him just as they step onto the European stage. Internally, the Cherries are understood to value him at around £80 million. That figure is not an official asking price, but it is the benchmark. Any bid that reaches, or even approaches, that level would force Bournemouth into a serious conversation.
There is another layer to this. Scott’s own preference.
The Evening Standard reports that Scott is keen on a move to Chelsea after the Blues’ £64 million bid was turned away. Standard Sport’s understanding is that while Scott wants the switch to Stamford Bridge, Bournemouth maintain that he is not for sale and are still trying to secure him on a new deal.
That tension – between a club intent on keeping a star and a player open to a major move – can only hold for so long in a market as aggressive as this.
Arsenal, Chelsea and a Defining Midfield Battle
All of this leaves Arsenal in a delicate position. Their dream scenario is clear: land Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle and build the midfield around him. If that fails, they pivot to Scott.
But Chelsea have already stolen a march on that second option, forcing Arsenal to watch closely. If Chelsea return with an improved offer closer to Bournemouth’s internal valuation, the race could accelerate quickly. Bournemouth’s refusal to sell will be tested not just by money, but by the player’s own ambitions.
For Arsenal, the choice is stark. Do they keep pushing on Guimaraes and risk losing Scott to a rival? Or do they move faster on the Bournemouth midfielder to avoid being left with neither?
Chelsea, meanwhile, see an opportunity to secure one of the most highly regarded young midfielders in the league, a player praised by some of the game’s most influential coaches, and to do so at the expense of a direct rival.
