Arsenal vs Chelsea: Injury Updates and London Bragging Rights

Mikel Arteta will send Arsenal into Sunday’s showdown with Chelsea with one eye on London bragging rights and the other on a slowly clearing injury picture.

The Premier League’s early pace-setters collide at the Emirates Stadium with both clubs defending perfect records, and Arteta used his pre-match briefing to play down some concerns and quietly welcome a major boost.

Mosquera scare played down

Cristhian Mosquera’s withdrawal in the 1-0 win at Aston Villa on Monday sparked immediate alarm, but Arteta moved quickly to cool fears over the defender’s hamstring.

Mosquera started at Villa Park before making way for Ezri Konsa, prompting questions over a possible muscle problem. Arteta insisted the change was largely preventative.

“He was more a precaution than anything else, so we'll have to see tomorrow in the session how he feels,” the Arsenal manager said.

The Spaniard is still being assessed and was not spotted in Thursday’s training images from London Colney, leaving a small question mark over his involvement against Chelsea.

Timber edging towards long-awaited return

The more uplifting news for Arsenal came at full-back. Jurrien Timber, who has not featured this season after a minor groin procedure in the summer, is edging closer to a comeback.

The Dutchman was seen in light training on Thursday, and Arteta hinted that an appearance in the matchday squad is no longer far-fetched.

“Yeah, he's in really good condition at the moment,” Arteta said. “As I said, he's been now a few weeks on the pitch and he's been training with us now, so he's in a good place.”

An “outside chance” is all it is for this weekend, but even that represents a significant lift for a squad bracing for a relentless schedule at home and in Europe.

Guimaraes a doubt after fresh knock

Not all of the medical updates were positive. Bruno Guimaraes faces a race against time to be ready for Chelsea after suffering another knock in the Villa game.

The Brazilian has already missed the opening 3-0 win over Coventry City, having picked up an issue in the Community Shield victory over Manchester City. Now he is back on the treatment table, at least temporarily.

“Yeah, he had a knock against Villa in the previous game and he's been assessed. Hopefully tomorrow he will be okay for training,” Arteta said.

Like Mosquera, Guimaraes was absent from the training pictures on Thursday, adding a layer of uncertainty to Arteta’s midfield options.

Saliba inclusion hints at earlier return

There was also a quiet but significant development regarding William Saliba. The centre-back has been named in both Arsenal’s 25-man Premier League squad and their Champions League list, a decision that signals optimism over his recovery from a serious back issue sustained at the World Cup.

That inclusion suggests the club believe he could feature before January, when squads are resubmitted.

“Yes, we don't really know the amount of weeks he's going to be out because it's about a healing process in the beginning, it's a bit different,” Arteta explained.

“We know that we have to respect certain timings. The progression has been really positive in the last few weeks, but we need to wait and see how that one reaction will start to put a lot into it.”

For a defender viewed as central to Arsenal’s long-term structure, any hint of accelerated progress is significant.

Perfect starts on the line

Arsenal and Chelsea arrive at the Emirates as two of only four Premier League sides to have won both of their opening fixtures. Early days, yes, but the stakes feel higher when the neighbours are involved.

Last season, the rivalry tilted heavily in Arsenal’s favour. Across four meetings in all competitions, the Gunners won three and drew the other, establishing a clear upper hand.

Now both clubs step into a new chapter with perfect records and renewed ambition. Arteta’s squad is not yet at full strength, but the clouds are thinning. How long can they keep winning while the pieces fall back into place?
