Cristhian Mosquera’s hamstring scare has handed Arsenal an early-season fitness riddle, but Mikel Arteta insists the outlook remains positive.
The defender limped out of last week’s clash with Aston Villa, sitting down and grabbing the middle of his hamstring before making his way off. Arteta tried to calm fears in the immediate aftermath, saying: “He is fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something.”
A week later, the concern sharpened. Mosquera did not make the squad for Sunday’s meeting with Chelsea, and his absence opened the door for Ezri Konsa to make his full debut in an Arsenal shirt.
Arteta plays down long-term fears
After the Chelsea game, Arteta confirmed what many suspected: Mosquera is dealing with a muscle problem.
“He had a muscular issue, and we think it’s not too much,” the Arsenal manager said. “But we need to wait and see the next few days for how it evolves.”
That wait is crucial. With Napoli visiting on Wednesday, the clock is ticking. If the club’s medical staff need a few more days to assess the defender, his involvement in midweek already looks unlikely. A return against Sunderland on Saturday feels like a safer bet.
For a player who has quickly become a key part of Arsenal’s defensive structure, any spell on the sidelines is significant. Arteta, though, is clearly determined not to rush him back and risk a more serious setback.
Konsa seizes his chance
If there was a cloud in Mosquera’s absence, Konsa did his best to blow it away.
Thrust into the starting XI, the summer arrival delivered a composed, convincing performance against Chelsea. One challenge in particular – a full-blooded, perfectly timed tackle on former teammate Morgan Rogers – jolted the crowd to its feet and underlined exactly why Arsenal moved for him.
Konsa is only just back from his holidays and still building full match sharpness, so Arteta will be wary of overloading him so early in the campaign. But on technical and tactical grounds, there is little doubt he can handle another big assignment if called upon against Napoli.
The question now is simple: does Arteta gamble on Konsa’s freshness again in Europe, or hold something back with Sunderland and a long season looming?
