Arsenal's EFL Cup Challenge: Unbeaten Run Meets Defensive Doubts
Arsenal head to Ipswich Town on Tuesday night carrying a flawless record and an old frustration.
Six games played this season across all competitions. Six wins. The Premier League campaign is rolling, Europe has started smoothly, and even a contentious penalty decision in Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Sunderland could not derail Mikel Arteta’s side.
Yet the EFL Cup tells a different story.
Arsenal have not lifted this trophy since 1993, and last season’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in the final only deepened the sense of unfinished business. The hunt begins again at Portman Road, where an Ipswich side buoyed by a 3-1 win over Leicester City in the previous round lies in wait.
Arteta’s squad, though, is not at full strength.
White worry as Timber returns
Ben White has been ever-present for Arsenal this season, a constant on the team sheet and a key part of their defensive platform. That run is now under threat.
The defender was seen clutching his groin before being withdrawn at half time against Sunderland. Arteta offered no detailed update afterwards, but the signs point to White being a major doubt for the trip to Ipswich. Arsenal will not take risks with a player so central to their structure this early in the campaign.
The concern over White is at least softened by the timing of Jurrien Timber’s return. The Dutchman has just shaken off his own groin issue and came through the entire second half at the Stadium of Light without any setbacks. If White does not make it, Timber’s recovery suddenly becomes vital.
Mosquera close, but not cleared
Cristhian Mosquera has sat out Arsenal’s last three matches after picking up a hamstring strain against Aston Villa. That setback interrupted a promising start, but the tone from the manager’s camp is positive.
Arteta has said the Spaniard is doing “really well” in his recovery, and crucially, Mosquera has not been ruled out of the third-round tie. Arsenal will weigh his progress carefully before deciding whether to involve him, but his name remains in the conversation for Portman Road.
Saliba the only long-term absentee
Beyond the short-term doubts, William Saliba stands alone on the long-term injury list.
The French defender’s back problem, which flared up again during the World Cup, continues to keep him out of action. Arsenal do not expect him back until at least late November, with the Newcastle United fixture earmarked as a possible return date. Until then, Arteta must continue to manage without one of his defensive pillars.
No suspensions for the Gunners
One area where Arsenal are completely clear is discipline. They have no suspensions to contend with for this tie.
So the picture is simple enough. An unbeaten Arsenal, still chasing their first League Cup crown in over three decades, head to Ipswich with momentum, a couple of defensive doubts, and a competition they have waited far too long to conquer.
