So his omission raised eyebrows. According to BBC Sport, Arsenal view it purely as a precaution. No fresh setback. No new complication with the long-term groin issue that has already cost him so much time.
Timber missed the 2026 World Cup because of that injury and sat out the club’s entire pre-season. After that kind of disruption, Arsenal are clearly unwilling to rush him. The message is simple: better to hold him back for a night in September than lose him again for months.
Ben White joins growing injury list
If Timber is being wrapped in cotton wool, Ben White simply isn’t available.
The defender suffered a muscular problem during the first half of the 2-0 win over Sunderland and did not recover in time to face Ipswich. The early indication is that it is a groin issue, though Arsenal have yet to confirm the full extent.
With White out, Arteta loses one of his most reliable and versatile pieces. It forces another reshuffle in a back line already stretched.
William Saliba remains sidelined, and Cristhian Mosquera is still out as well, though the latter is expected to be closer to a return after the international break. Until then, Arsenal must navigate a busy schedule with a patched-up defence and careful load management for those returning from long-term problems.
Arsenal arrive in this tie as favourites, unbeaten, and in form. But with the scars of last season’s final and a defence in flux, the EFL Cup is already asking a familiar question: can this squad stay standing long enough to finally lift it?
