Attention has shifted to Italy, where Pio Esposito is beginning to look like the next big tug-of-war between Europe’s elite.
According to reports, Arsenal sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old in Inter Milan’s pre-season derby against AC Milan, a low-key summer fixture that suddenly carried heavyweight significance for recruitment departments. At 6ft 3in, Esposito offers the kind of physical presence Arteta has been keen to add to a forward line that already includes Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz.
The feedback has been positive. Esposito has impressed Arsenal’s staff in recent months, enough for the club to consider him a genuine option as they prepare to defend their Premier League title.
They are not alone.
Manchester United are also tracking the striker, viewing him as a long-term solution rather than a panic buy. The difference in approach is telling: United are said to be in no rush to put an offer on the table, while Arsenal’s need to strengthen the position feels more immediate.
Inter, though, have tried to slam the door shut. Publicly, the Serie A champions have labelled Esposito “untouchable”, a clear message to clubs circling their young forward. Privately, the stance is more nuanced. Reports suggest a price has been set behind closed doors: £73 million. If the bids arrive, Inter will at least listen.
Those close to Esposito insist he remains committed to Inter. Yet the Premier League pulls at almost every ambitious young attacker, and the suggestion is that England appeals to him. He is understood to be open to a move if the right project and the right offer land in front of him.
For Arsenal, that combination – age, profile, upside – fits the model. The question is whether they are prepared to meet Inter’s valuation and beat United to the punch.
Villa braced for Konsa exit as Arsenal circle
While Arsenal weigh up a major outlay in attack, their defensive plans are also gathering pace.
Aston Villa are reportedly resigned to losing Ezri Konsa, with concern growing inside the club that the defender’s time at Villa Park is nearing its end. Arsenal have stepped up their interest, having first turned to Konsa when William Saliba suffered a back injury at the World Cup. Those worries at centre-back have not eased, with Ben White and Jurrien Timber also managing fitness issues.
At 28, Konsa represents experience rather than a project signing, and Arteta is understood to view him as a primary target to stabilise the back line. Arsenal’s opening bid, though, fell well short – just over half of Villa’s £60m valuation, according to reports.
Villa, already dealing with the departures of Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans this summer, are said to be “increasingly concerned” that Konsa will follow them out of the door. Team-mates are reportedly anxious too, fearing the defender has already made up his mind.
The competition is not limited to Arsenal. Liverpool, wrestling with defensive problems of their own, are monitoring the situation closely. Virgil van Dijk is back in the fold after the World Cup, but a pre-season injury to Joe Gomez and the absence of Jeremy Jacquet in other friendlies have left Andoni Iraola short of options at the back.
So the picture is clear. Arsenal are pushing on two fronts: a £73m-rated striker in Milan and a Premier League-proven centre-half in Birmingham. The champions know they cannot stand still.
Whether they land Esposito, prise Konsa from Villa, or are forced to pivot yet again, this window will say plenty about how serious Arsenal are about staying on top.
