Arsenal’s Illan Meslier Linked to Marseille Move Weeks After Joining
Illan Meslier, Arsenal’s summer signing, might be on his way out just weeks after joining Mikel Arteta's squad. The goalkeeper, who moved from Leeds United in July, has only featured for 45 minutes at the Emirates Stadium and now appears linked with a switch back to France.
Marseille Targeting Arsenal’s New Goalkeeper
Reports from Foot Mercato suggest that Marseille have identified Meslier as their top choice to replace Geronimo Rulli, who recently left for Manchester City. Marseille are actively searching for a new first-choice keeper before the transfer window closes, and Meslier fits their profile perfectly.
Arteta’s Squad Shuffle
This summer, Mikel Arteta has been busy reshaping his squad following Arsenal’s Premier League title win and Champions League final loss to PSG last season. The club made a big move by signing Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes for £75 million, but the goalkeeping department remains unsettled.
Currently, Meslier is third choice behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga, both established keepers. While brought in as quality backup, Meslier's limited pathway to first-team football has opened the door for Marseille’s interest.
Seeking More Playing Time
Meslier’s move could revive his career, which stalled during his final season at Leeds where he lost his starting spot and didn’t play any Premier League matches. Instead, Leeds rotated between Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow, the latter now at Manchester United.
Marseille’s goalkeeper situation is also in flux. Jeffrey De Lange started their season opener but may leave soon, creating an opening for Meslier to claim regular playing time in Ligue 1.
Transfer Window Drama
As the transfer deadline nears, Arsenal face a decision: can they afford to let Meslier depart so soon? Their goalkeeping depth would be tested if injuries hit Raya or Kepa, yet the Frenchman’s exit might be inevitable if Marseille push ahead quickly.
The next few days will reveal whether Meslier stays at Arsenal or begins a new chapter in France, impacting both his future and Arsenal’s squad plans as they defend their domestic crown and pursue European success.
