Arsenal Faces Injury Concerns Ahead of Chelsea Derby
Arsenal’s perfect start to the season has met its first serious snag – and it arrived in the most public way possible.
At an open training session at London Colney on Thursday, two notable absentees told their own story. There was no sign of £75 million summer signing Bruno Guimaraes. No sign either of defender Cristhian Mosquera. For a squad preparing for a London derby with Chelsea, it was a worrying sight.
Guimaraes scare before first big London derby
Guimaraes was meant to be the new heartbeat of Mikel Arteta’s midfield, prised from Newcastle United in one of the marquee deals of the window. Instead, his first weeks in North London have been dominated by a groin problem that simply will not clear.
The Brazilian already sat out Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Coventry City, watching on as his new teammates cruised to a 3-0 win. He did get on the pitch at Villa Park on Monday, but only for a 19‑minute cameo off the bench in the narrow 1-0 victory over Aston Villa.
Arteta has treated him like fine crystal. Minutes carefully managed, workload monitored, no unnecessary risks. With Arsenal stacked in central areas, the club has opted for caution, banking on Guimaraes being fully ready when the season’s major tests arrive.
One of those tests is here already. A trip to face Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea, with both clubs defending perfect starts, is exactly the sort of tactical chess match for which Guimaraes was signed. His absence from Thursday’s session raises the very real prospect that Arsenal may have to face it without their new midfield anchor – and that strips some of the fluidity from Arteta’s carefully constructed system.
Mosquera worry grows after Villa substitution
If Guimaraes is a concern, Mosquera is edging towards a problem.
The Spanish defender was forced off late in the win at Villa Park, replaced by Ezri Konsa in the 79th minute. At the time, Arteta moved quickly to calm any sense of alarm. The change, he suggested, was about prevention, not crisis.
“He’s fine, but he was feeling like he was about to have something, and that’s why we have the bench that we have, and that’s why we had to bring in Ezri,” Arteta said after the match.
Those words sounded reassuring on Monday night. Four days later, Mosquera’s absence from open training casts them in a different light. If the 22-year-old is still feeling anything ahead of a high-intensity derby, the medical staff will be under pressure to make a hard call.
Should Mosquera fail to make it, the path is clear for Konsa. Signed from Aston Villa for £51 million last month, the England international would be in line for his full home debut at the Emirates. It is exactly the sort of occasion he was brought in for – a big game, big stakes, and a chance to plant a flag in Arsenal’s back line.
Defensive depth under early strain
The issues do not stop there. Jurrien Timber remains a doubt for the weekend, still not fully clear of his own problems. William Saliba is already out for the long term after an injury worsened during the World Cup, a blow that has stripped away one of Arteta’s most reliable pillars.
Suddenly, a defence that looked deep and versatile on paper is being stretched in early September. Rotations that were supposed to be about tactical variety are starting to look like necessity.
All of this comes with Chelsea looming. Alonso’s side have started the campaign in a blaze of goals, beating Fulham 3-2 and edging Brighton 4-3 in two chaotic, high-scoring contests. Arsenal, by contrast, have built their perfect record on control: a comfortable 3-0 dismissal of Coventry, followed by that gritty 1-0 at Villa Park.
Two teams, two wins each, two very different paths to them.
Now the equation sharpens. Can Arsenal keep their balance, their structure, and their early momentum if their £75 million midfielder and one of their first-choice defenders are watching from the stands when Chelsea arrive?
