Arsenal Hit by Injuries Before Crucial Chelsea Derby

Mikel Arteta confronts a tough selection dilemma as Arsenal prepares for the London derby against Chelsea. Two important players, Bruno Guimaraes and Cristhian Mosquera, were absent from Thursday’s training session at London Colney, casting doubt on their availability for the upcoming match.

Guimaraes and Mosquera Miss Training

According to reports from The Sun, the Gunners’ preparations suffered a blow when both summer signing Bruno Guimaraes and defender Cristhian Mosquera did not participate in the open training session. Guimaraes, who joined from Newcastle United in a £75 million transfer, has been battling a persistent groin injury. He missed Arsenal’s opening Premier League game against Coventry City but made a brief 19-minute appearance off the bench in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa on Monday.

Arteta has handled Guimaraes cautiously, limiting his playing time while ensuring the squad has midfield depth. Losing such a key player for a big fixture against Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea would impact Arsenal's tactical approach.

Concerns Over Mosquera’s Fitness

The situation with Mosquera seems more uncertain. The young Spanish defender had to be substituted late in the Aston Villa game, replaced by Ezri Konsa in the 79th minute. Initially, Arteta described this as a precaution rather than a serious injury.

“He’s fine, but he felt something coming on, so we had to bring Ezri on,” Arteta said after the match.

If Mosquera is unable to play, Konsa, who recently transferred from Aston Villa for £51 million, could make his first home start at the Emirates Stadium.

Defensive Depth Under Strain

Arsenal’s defensive options are further stretched with Jurrien Timber also doubtful. With William Saliba out long-term due to a World Cup-related injury, Arteta’s backline faces early challenges this season.

London Rivals Both Perfect So Far

Both Arsenal and Chelsea have won their opening two Premier League matches. Arsenal began with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City and followed it up with a narrow 1-0 win at home to Aston Villa. Meanwhile, Chelsea put on high-scoring performances to edge past Fulham 3-2 and Brighton 4-3.
