Arsenal Wins Race for Leicester Prodigy Jeremy Monga

Manchester United’s summer planning is starting to look less like a rebuild and more like a scramble.

While Arsenal quietly close in on one of the country’s brightest teenagers, United legends line up in the media urging the club to move faster, think smarter and, crucially, stop overpaying for the wrong players.

Arsenal Win the Race for Jeremy Monga

At Leicester City, Jeremy Monga has barely started his career and already he’s at the centre of a tug of war. United wanted him. So did Manchester City and Chelsea. None of them are getting him.

The 16-year-old, widely viewed as one of the most exciting young English talents in the game, has reportedly chosen Arsenal as his next step. The Gunners are expected to pay between £10m and £15m to prise him away from the King Power.

For United, it’s another reminder that even at academy level, the elite battle is ruthless. Arsenal, with a clear pathway for young players and a manager unafraid to trust them, have won this round.

United Icons Call for Smarter Squad Building

While United miss out on a wonderkid, former Old Trafford figures are effectively drawing up their own recruitment plans on air.

Nicky Butt has been particularly vocal. The former midfielder wants United to go hard for West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, a player who has caught the eye at the World Cup with the Netherlands.

“He's an explosive player, he's good to watch, but I don't think he's consistent enough,” Butt told Paddy Power. The criticism didn’t stop him from pushing the move. The key point, in his eyes, is value and depth.

“The money shouldn't be a lot to get him, and United have to build a squad. It can't be all about going and getting the superstar signings,” he said, insisting Summerville has the potential to start every week for United if he kicks on.

Butt’s wider message was blunt: United’s bench is nowhere near strong enough.

“When United played Leeds at Old Trafford last season and they got beat, the players on the bench and around the squad weren't good enough. When they're all fit they're really good but they still need to build the squad so I'd be going for some players like that as well.”

It’s a theme that keeps returning. Less glamour, more depth.

Saha: Hijack Liverpool’s Move for Diomande

Louis Saha is looking in a different direction but with the same urgency.

The former United striker wants his old club to step straight into Liverpool’s path and hijack their pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande. Liverpool are prepared to commit to a package worth up to £86m for the 19-year-old Ivory Coast international, who is also attracting interest from PSG and has shone for his country at the World Cup.

“Man United should definitely hijack Liverpool’s interest in Yan Diomande,” Saha told the Metro, and later reiterated via Casinolyze.co.uk. He raved about the modern wide-forward profile: a winger who can dribble, pass, impose himself physically and play with courage.

Diomande’s rise from a difficult start in the US to stardom in Europe clearly impresses Saha, who believes the teenager can grow into a superstar “like Lamine Yamal”.

If United listen, they would not only land a major talent, they would also land a psychological blow on their fiercest rivals.

Neville’s World Cup Watch: Felix Nmecha on the Radar

Gary Neville, watching the World Cup with a scout’s eye, has another name in mind: Felix Nmecha.

The Borussia Dortmund and Germany midfielder has stood out for his national team, and Neville believes United should be paying close attention, especially with prices for other targets spiralling.

“The more he [Nmecha] plays like he did the other night the more expensive he'll get,” Neville warned. With West Ham’s Fernandes reportedly being quoted at £100m and other midfield options such as Sandro Tonali also carrying huge fees, Neville sees tournaments like this as a chance to spot value.

“He looked outstanding the other night, it looked like he had absolutely everything,” Neville said. For a club that has often paid top dollar for established names, the hint is clear: look earlier, look sharper.

Ederson: “Practically Done” to United

One deal that does look advanced is Ederson’s move from Atalanta.

The Brazilian midfielder did not feature in his country’s recent 3-0 win over Haiti, but he made time afterwards to speak to Tuttosport. There, he described his transfer to Old Trafford as “practically done”.

“I have to make the most of this moment. I am here and it is a wonderful thing, something you must always live to the fullest,” he said.

United are understood to be paying £38.8m for the Atalanta man. Only the official announcement and the obligatory shirt pose are missing. In a window full of noise and speculation, this one feels close to the finish line.

Free-Transfer Midfield Power: Goretzka and Kessie

United’s midfield search doesn’t end with Ederson. Two more familiar names are hovering on the horizon.

Leon Goretzka is expected to leave Bayern Munich as a free agent after the World Cup. Franck Kessie is also set to become available for nothing when he departs Al-Ahli. Both are still in their prime years, with Goretzka at 31 and Kessie at 29.

In the past, United would have needed huge fees to tempt them. Now, it would be about wages, project and role. The question is simple but significant: do United want to add ready-made experience in bulk, or keep chasing the next big thing at premium prices?

Nathan De Cat: Contract Leverage for Carrick’s United

At the other end of the age scale, Nathan De Cat is emerging as a shrewd opportunity.

The 17-year-old Anderlecht talent has drawn interest from Tottenham and now Manchester United. One key factor: he has just one year left on his contract and will enter the final 12 months at the end of this month.

If Michael Carrick’s side decide to make a move, United could use that contract situation as leverage in negotiations. In a market where fees are soaring, exploiting expiring deals is one of the few remaining advantages big clubs can still use.

Tonali, Fernandes and the Price of Ambition

The market for established midfielders remains brutal.

Newcastle United have already turned down an offer of around £80m from Tottenham for Sandro Tonali, who only arrived on Tyneside in 2023. Reports suggest Newcastle would consider selling the Italy international, but only for around £100m.

United have been linked with Tonali, but that price tag sits in the same bracket as West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. The Hammers are locked in talks over the 21-year-old, with Tottenham believed to be “very close” to agreeing personal terms according to journalist Matteo Moretto.

Spurs may be in pole position, but crucially, discussions between them and West Ham are yet to begin. Fabrizio Romano reports that United are still pushing hard, speaking to both Fernandes’ representatives and the London club as they try to force a breakthrough.

The battle for Fernandes’ signature is wide open. It will not be cheap. It will not be simple.

Beckham, Casemiro and the MLS “Discovery” Twist

Away from Europe, one of United’s recent marquee signings is edging towards a very different stage.

Casemiro looks set to join Inter Miami as a free agent, with David Beckham poised to bring the Brazilian to MLS. Yet even a free transfer comes with a twist in the United States.

Because Casemiro had reportedly also been in talks with LA Galaxy, Inter Miami may have to pay their MLS rivals up to £750,000 under the league’s “discovery clause”. Galaxy are classed as the club that “discovered” him within MLS rules, despite his glittering spells at Real Madrid, Porto and Manchester United.

For Beckham, it’s a quirk of the system. For United, it’s another symbol of a squad being quietly dismantled and rebuilt piece by piece.

From missing out on Jeremy Monga to wrestling for Mateus Fernandes, from Ederson’s imminent arrival to the chase for Diomande and Summerville, United’s summer is already loaded with decisions that will shape the next era.

The question is no longer whether they will spend. It’s whether, in a market this ruthless, they can finally start spending like a club that knows exactly what it wants to be.
