Arsenal Targets Manchester United Academy Stars Scanlon and Ogunneye

Arsenal have launched a bold raid on Manchester United’s youth ranks, pushing to sign highly rated pair Scanlon and Ogunneye in a move that underlines just how seriously the Premier League champions now treat academy recruitment.

According to The Telegraph, Arsenal have stepped up an ambitious bid to prise both players away from Old Trafford this summer, convinced they can tempt the youngsters south as part of a revamped, aggressive talent strategy.

This is not happening in a vacuum. United have already dipped into Arsenal’s own youth pool in recent seasons, landing Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven. That sting has not been forgotten in north London. This pursuit of Scanlon and Ogunneye feels like a direct response, a counter-punch in what is fast becoming a sharp-edged rivalry between two of English football’s most storied academies.

United prospects ready to move on

Both players arrive at this crossroads with senior experience under their belts.

Scanlon, 19, spent last season on loan at Swindon Town in League Two, making six appearances and scoring once as he tasted regular men’s football for the first time. It was a brief spell, but enough to showcase his potential outside the underage bubble.

Ogunneye, 20, went further. He featured 21 times for Newport County before returning to Manchester United in January, banking valuable minutes and learning the realities of the lower leagues. Those months on loan have sharpened their ambitions – and, crucially, their readiness to leave United on a permanent basis in search of a clearer path to senior football.

Arsenal have moved quickly to exploit that opening. The club are believed to have already tied down Scanlon to a two-year contract, with an option for a further 12 months. That kind of commitment for a young recruit is a clear signal: this is not a speculative punt, it is part of a defined plan.

De Maesschalck era begins with a statement

The timing is no coincidence. Arsenal’s push comes in the wake of Pascal De Maesschalck’s arrival as the new academy head, succeeding Per Mertesacker.

De Maesschalck, who carries a strong reputation from previous roles in European football, has been tasked with sharpening the club’s youth pipeline. Sporting director Andrea Berta set out the new direction clearly, saying Arsenal were “delighted” to bring in De Maesschalck, praising his “extensive experience from some of Europe’s leading football clubs” and his “outstanding track record in youth development.”

That appointment has been followed by action. Arsenal are targeting several domestic prospects, determined to ensure that the conveyor belt into Mikel Arteta’s first team does not slow, even as the senior side competes at the very top of the Premier League.

The pursuit of Scanlon and Ogunneye is the clearest sign yet that this is not just talk.

Paperwork, compensation – and the next wave

The hard work now moves from the pitch to the offices. Arsenal must finalise paperwork and agree compensation with Manchester United to complete the double move and bring the pair to London.

They are not the only names on the list. The club are also expected to wrap up deals for other teenage talents, including Vincent Joseph and Axel Donczew, in the coming weeks as the recruitment drive continues at pace.

For supporters, the intrigue lies a step further down the line. With Arsenal’s first team packed with established internationals and emerging stars, the question is simple and unforgiving: which of these new arrivals, if any, can climb through the academy ranks and force their way into Arteta’s plans in the seasons to come?
