Arsenal Sign Newcastle Captain Bruno Guimaraes for £75m
Arsenal have taken a champion’s swing at the new season, prising Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes out of Tyneside in a deal worth around £75m and handing the Brazilian a four-year contract with an option for a fifth.
The Premier League title holders wanted a midfielder who could both set the tempo and rip it up. They have signed one of the few in England who does both.
A new pillar for Arteta’s midfield
Guimaraes arrives at The Emirates as one of the division’s most complete midfielders: a player who tackles, presses, dictates, and still finds time to score and create. At 28, this is not a project signing. This is a ready-made pillar for Mikel Arteta’s core.
“Since the first time I spoke to [Arsenal Sporting Director Andrea] Berta and Mikel, I was excited,” Guimaraes said on the club’s website. “I just felt inside of me that I need a new challenge in my life and I think to be an Arsenal player is going to be an exciting challenge in my life.
“I am so excited to start. We have tough games to play this season, so the squad is going to be very, very important and I’m hopeful we can achieve our dreams.”
That “new challenge” drops him into a midfield already stacked with authority: Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and captain Martin Odegaard. Arteta now has a group that can suffocate opponents, rotate roles, and still carry a threat from deep.
From Lyon to Newcastle icon
Newcastle knew exactly what they were losing.
Signed from Olympique Lyonnais in January 2022, Guimaraes transformed from clever recruit to heartbeat of the side in a matter of months. He drove their surge up the table, dragged them through difficult spells, and eventually took the armband.
Across 195 appearances in all competitions, he scored 31 goals and, just as importantly, set the tone. His crowning moment came in 2025, when he captained Newcastle to League Cup glory, ending a long, painful wait for domestic silverware.
He carried that form onto the international stage, becoming a regular for Brazil and featuring at this year’s World Cup. This is the calibre of player Arsenal have just added to a title-winning dressing room.
Another blow for a shaken Newcastle
For Newcastle, this is another punch to the gut.
Guimaraes leaves in the wake of key departures Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, while manager Eddie Howe has already stepped away, replaced by German coach Matthias Jaissle. The spine that led the club’s recent resurgence has been ripped out piece by piece.
Losing a captain is one thing. Losing a captain who also happens to be your best midfielder and emotional reference point is something else entirely. The rebuild under Jaissle now looks steeper, the margin for error slimmer.
Arsenal sharpen their edge
At Arsenal, the mood is very different. This is a champion doubling down.
“As we have all seen, Bruno can play as a defensive midfielder and as a box-to-box player. He combines quality with quantity, and has provided goals and assists for his team every year,” sporting director Berta said.
“Bruno will allow Mikel to further develop our playing style and will also increase our internal competitiveness, which is essential for maintaining the standards required when we are aiming to win major trophies.”
That internal competitiveness will be fierce. Guimaraes can sit as a holding midfielder, freeing Rice to step higher. He can play alongside Rice in a double pivot. He can surge beyond Odegaard in games that demand extra thrust from midfield.
For Arteta, it means tactical freedom. For the players, it means no comfort zone. For Rice in particular, who carried a huge workload last season on the way to Arsenal’s first league title in 22 years, it means much-needed protection and the chance to be used more selectively across four competitions.
Statement of intent
This is not just a squad signing. It is a statement.
Arsenal, already champions, have gone into the league and taken the captain of a direct rival, a player at his peak, a World Cup-level midfielder, and plugged him straight into an already elite engine room. It sends a message to the rest of the division and to Europe: last season was not the ceiling.
The new campaign starts at home to promoted Coventry City on 21 August.
By then, the Emirates crowd will expect to see their new No. 8 — or 6, or 10, depending on the day — dictating games in red and white, not black and white.
