Liverpool move first on Barcola
Bradley Barcola has been on Arsenal’s radar for months. The club have scouted the Paris Saint-Germain winger extensively, viewing the France international as a live option to bolster Mikel Arteta’s forward line.
But the landscape has shifted.
Liverpool are now reported to be in talks with PSG over a deal for the 23-year-old, with L’Equipe claiming the Anfield hierarchy have opened negotiations. At this stage, though, it is anything but straightforward. PSG value Barcola at around €170 million (£145m), while Liverpool are said to be pushing to drag that figure down towards the £85m mark.
That is not a gap; it is a chasm. The kind that tends to keep a saga bubbling until deadline day.
If Arsenal decide to step into that conversation, they know the tempo. Any serious move for Barcola is likely to run on the same long, drawn-out timeline, with PSG in no mood to fold easily on price.
Vinicius Jr: the marquee vision
Barcola is not the headline name on Arsenal’s left-wing shortlist anyway.
Inside the club, Vinicius Jr is understood to be the primary target for that position. The Real Madrid star represents a different category of signing entirely: a statement, a centrepiece, the kind of arrival that would reshape the attacking hierarchy at the Emirates Stadium overnight.
A move for the Brazilian is currently being explored, with Arsenal clear that the left side of their attack needs fresh power and unpredictability. The club’s recruitment this summer has been framed around strengthening a title-winning squad rather than rebuilding it, and the left wing has emerged as a key zone for an upgrade.
Outgoings force the issue
The urgency is not just theoretical. It is structural.
Leandro Trossard’s exit to Besiktas has already been agreed, a £17m deal finalised earlier this month. His departure removes a reliable, flexible option from Arteta’s rotation, someone who could plug gaps across the front line and offer goals from the bench.
Gabriel Martinelli’s future, meanwhile, remains uncertain. That cloud only sharpens the need for clarity in that channel of the pitch. If Arsenal are to defend their Premier League crown with authority, they cannot afford to be light in such a decisive area.
Those two situations, taken together, explain why the club are casting their net at both the Barcola and Vinicius levels of the market. One represents elite potential already thriving in Ligue 1. The other is an established superstar at the very top of the European game.
Building around a title-winning core
Arsenal have not stood still. Christos Tzolis has already arrived from Club Brugge after a £34m agreement with the Belgian side, adding another attacking piece to Arteta’s puzzle. Illan Meslier has joined as well, the only other new face so far in a squad that lifted the Premier League trophy last season.
