Arsenal Targets Ezri Konsa Amid Injury Crisis
Arsenal’s search for defensive cover has led them straight into a storm at Aston Villa, where an opening bid for Ezri Konsa has gone down like a lead balloon.
What was expected to be a relatively quiet summer for Arsenal at centre-back has been ripped up by events. William Saliba’s injury, and the prospect of a prolonged spell on the sidelines, has forced a rethink in north London. A new central defender is no longer a luxury. It is a necessity.
Arsenal change course – and land on Konsa
Arsenal had flirted with other options. Maxence Lacroix was on their radar before he slipped away to Chelsea. Once that door closed, Konsa moved to the top of the list.
The attraction is obvious. Under Unai Emery, Konsa has grown into one of Villa’s most reliable performers, a constant in a side that has pushed its way into the Premier League’s upper tier. His form has carried onto the international stage, where he impressed for England at the World Cup.
He offers more than just solidity. Konsa’s versatility across the back line gives any manager tactical freedom, and that kind of profile does not come cheap when the player is tied down until 2028. Villa know it. So do Arsenal.
Villa dig in as dressing room braces for exit
Villa have already waved goodbye to Morgan Rogers and Youri Tielemans this summer and would rather not rip out another pillar of Emery’s structure. The club are under no pressure to sell, and they are acting like it.
Reports indicate Villa have set their price: around £60 million. Inside the dressing room, though, there is a different mood. The squad are described as increasingly resigned to losing Konsa, aware that when a club of Arsenal’s size fix on a target, the saga rarely just fades away.
The tension lies between that internal acceptance and the stance of the ownership. Co-owner Nassef Sawiris has made it clear through his reaction that Villa will not be pushed around.
The bid that lit the fuse
Arsenal’s first move has only hardened that position. Their opening offer, believed to be a little more than half of Villa’s £60m valuation, was met with anger at the top of the Midlands club. For a player central to Emery’s plans and contracted long term, Villa saw it as a low-ball attempt to test their resolve.
It did not go down well with Sawiris, and that response has set the tone. If Arsenal want Konsa, they will have to come back with something far closer to Villa’s number. There will be no cut-price deal here.
Arsenal, though, are not walking away. They are already deep into an aggressive window. Bruno Guimaraes is due to arrive for £75m as their fourth summer signing, following Piero Hincapie, Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis. They are still in the market for both a centre-back and a winger after missing out on Vinicius Junior, and Konsa remains firmly on their list.
The need is obvious. With Saliba out and Jurrien Timber and Ben White also dealing with injuries, Mikel Arteta’s defensive options have thinned at exactly the wrong moment. Konsa is seen as the man to steady that line.
Villa are braced for another bid. Arsenal are expected to return, this time with a proposal that at least respects the £60m benchmark. The champions know they must do better than their first attempt.
Now the question hangs over the summer: will Arsenal push high enough, and will Villa’s resistance finally crack when the numbers climb into the territory they have been demanding?
