The response in north London has been swift. Julian Alvarez has moved to the top of Mikel Arteta’s attacking wishlist, with reports suggesting personal terms are already in place for the Manchester City forward. Alvarez is said to favour Barcelona, but a Premier League return remains firmly on the table and Arsenal are pushing, particularly after missing out on Morgan Rogers as well.
Alvarez is one of three forwards under serious consideration. Bradley Barcola and Iliman Ndiaye also feature on a reshaped shortlist, with Arsenal determined not to leave the window without extra firepower. Barcola appeals, but Liverpool are further along in talks with PSG and the French champions are demanding around £130m – a figure that dwarfs Arsenal’s valuation. Ndiaye remains another live option as the club weigh cost against impact.
The real hammer blow, though, is coming in midfield. Newcastle have effectively confirmed that Bruno Guimaraes is on his way to the Emirates, with an official announcement now a formality after the Brazilian passed his medical. The fee is understood to be around £75m, rising towards £80m with add-ons, making Guimaraes Arsenal’s third major signing of the summer after Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis.
Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson has already hinted that Arsenal tried to drive the price down. They failed. If Guimaraes delivers what Arteta expects, nobody at the Emirates will care.
Arsenal’s recruitment team have also been casting their eye over the next generation. Pio Esposito, Inter Milan’s highly rated 21-year-old striker, has been watched closely, with scouts in attendance during pre-season. Inter publicly insist he is “untouchable”, yet a price of around £73m has been set behind closed doors. Esposito is open to a Premier League move. Arsenal and Manchester United are both circling.
Liverpool rip up the script with Araujo and chase Barcola
At Anfield, the story has taken a dramatic twist. Liverpool have agreed a season-long loan for Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo, a move that would have sounded fanciful at the start of the window but now looks close to reality.
Widespread reports say a deal is in place with the LaLiga champions, with Fabrizio Romano adding that a verbal agreement has been reached and the switch signed off by Deco. Liverpool will also have an option to buy the 27-year-old next summer if the Uruguay international impresses. In the middle of a defensive injury crisis, this is not just cover; it is a statement.
The Merseyside club are not stopping there. Liverpool are pushing ahead in talks for Bradley Barcola as they seek to inject more pace and unpredictability into their front line. Discussions with PSG have taken place, yet a sizeable gap in valuation remains, with the French club holding out for a substantial fee for the France international.
Arsenal are watching that situation closely, ready to pounce if Liverpool’s negotiations stall. For now, though, Jürgen Klopp’s side are further down the road, and Barcola knows his next move could define the early years of his career.
Tottenham, too, are lurking with interest in Savinho and Cody Gakpo as they search for attacking reinforcements, but Liverpool’s intent on Barcola is clear. Araujo at the back, a new winger up top – the shape of the new-look Liverpool is starting to form.
Manchester City brace for Rodri exit and target Enzo Fernandez
Over at the Etihad, Manchester City are planning for life without Rodri. Barcelona have already seen a £38.6m bid for the midfielder rejected, with City valuing the former Atletico Madrid man at closer to £68.5m. The gulf between those figures has stalled meaningful negotiations, yet Barcelona are expected to return with a second offer.
City, never a club to wait around, have begun plotting their response. Enzo Fernandez has emerged as a priority target to replace Rodri, with new manager Enzo Maresca keen on a reunion with his former vice-captain. Gianluca Di Marzio reports that City are working on two midfield additions to join Elliot Anderson, whose move is already complete.
Fernandez will not come cheap and prising him away will be complicated, but City are used to dealing at the sharp end of the market. Ayyoub Bouaddi is also on their radar after catching the eye at the recent World Cup with Morocco, with talks already underway.
