Barcelona’s financial squeeze meets a changing hierarchy
Barcelona’s summer has been driven by numbers as much as tactics. The club are working aggressively to free up salary cap space, and the departures are starting to stack up. Ronald Araujo has already gone. Marc Casado is expected to follow for around €40 million.
Even after those exits, the Catalan side remain open to more sales. Kounde, already back in pre-season training, sits right in the middle of that tension: a key asset on the pitch, a significant figure on the balance sheet, and no longer guaranteed a starring role.

Attention then swung decisively to Kounde. The Frenchman recently signed a new contract that runs until 2030, but contract length no longer guarantees security at Barcelona, particularly in a summer shaped by financial constraints and a new coach’s preferences.
Flick’s faith elsewhere, and a decisive meeting ahead
Inside Barcelona, Flick is quietly assembling a back line in his own image. On the left, he expects Joao Cancelo’s imminent arrival to cover the flank alongside Alejandro Balde. On the right, he has been convinced by Eric Garcia and highly rated youngster Xavi Espart.
That trust in other options pushes Kounde closer to a crossroads.
A crucial face-to-face meeting between Flick and Kounde is scheduled, a conversation that should finally clarify the defender’s immediate future. Barcelona are ready: if a major proposal lands, they will accept and move to recruit a top-level replacement more aligned with Flick’s long-term vision.
For all the noise around him, the decision now rests squarely with Kounde. Stay and fight for a place in a reshaped Barcelona defence where he is no longer guaranteed the spotlight, or embrace a new project built around his versatility.
Arsenal lead the chase – but not alone
Arsenal currently head the pack. Their need is clear, their admiration well known, and their system seemingly tailored to Kounde’s strengths. The Premier League, the chance to anchor a title-chasing defence, the promise of a central role in Arteta’s plans – it is a compelling package.
