Asencio Faces Sanctions as Mourinho Sets Standards at Real Madrid
Real Madrid defender Asencio has stepped out of one legal storm and straight into another crisis at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Recently cleared of charges over the non-consensual distribution of an explicit video, the 23-year-old now finds himself at the centre of internal disciplinary proceedings after a separate off-field offence. The club moved quickly once Asencio was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, a serious traffic violation that brought an eight-month driving licence suspension and a €14,400 fine.
This time, José Mourinho has decided to speak publicly. And he did not soften a single word.
The Portuguese head coach made it clear he is running out of patience with the defender’s behaviour away from the pitch. For Mourinho, the issue is not just one bad decision. It is the pattern.
“A Real Madrid player is a Real Madrid player 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 12 months a year,” he told the club’s official website, drawing a hard line on the standards he expects.
“Everything you do outside your professional area continues to reflect on Real Madrid, continues to affect the prestige of a club that is untouchable. I am not happy. Everyone makes mistakes, but accumulated mistakes are something different.”
That word – accumulated – hung over the whole intervention. This was not a routine dressing-down. It was a warning.
Praise on the training ground, trouble off it
Just as the criticism sharpened, Mourinho switched tone. He defended Asencio’s commitment at Valdebebas, underlining why the situation frustrates him so much.
“I spoke with him when I arrived,” Mourinho said. “We talked about things from the past. Since I arrived, I haven’t spoken about situations outside Valdebebas because in Valdebebas, he is an exemplary professional.
“When he was well, no one trained more or better than him. Now that he has been injured for weeks, he is the first to arrive, the last to leave, showing extreme dedication to his recovery.”
On the training pitches, Asencio is the model Mourinho wants. Away from them, he has become a problem the club can no longer ignore.
For now, the defender remains sidelined, continuing a physical recovery programme from a muscle problem that has kept him out all season. He has not played a single minute for Real Madrid in the current campaign, and his return date is still uncertain.
Internal process, external pressure
While he works on his body, the club will work through his case. Real Madrid’s hierarchy has opened a formal internal disciplinary process to address the drink-driving conviction and will decide on the appropriate punishment in the coming days.
Any sanction will land on a player already fighting on two fronts: fitness and reputation.
When he finally returns to full fitness, the challenge will be brutal. Asencio will not just be competing for a place in the team. He will be trying to convince Mourinho and a demanding dressing room that he can be trusted again.
