Asian Games Cricket Controversy: India and Pakistan Advance Without Playing Due to Rain

The men’s cricket quarter-finals at the Asian Games 2026 in Nagoya faced heavy criticism after rain and poor ground conditions prevented any play, letting both India and Pakistan advance without bowling a single ball.

Pakistan moved into the semi-finals after their quarter-final against Hong Kong was called off due to persistent rain. Their higher ICC T20I ranking secured their place. Shortly after, India received the same fate as their match versus Afghanistan was abandoned 16 minutes before the scheduled toss because of wet outfields and continuous rain.

Afghanistan and Hong Kong Eliminated Without Play

Both Afghanistan and Hong Kong exited the tournament without stepping on the field for their quarter-finals, sparking disappointment among players and fans alike. Afghanistan’s Mohammad Akram Zazai expressed frustration, feeling his team was ready and could have challenged India.

"We are here for the match but unfortunately it rained," said Zazai. "The rain started yesterday, so hard luck for us. We would have been happy to play here with India - our players are in form."

Zazai also mentioned that Afghanistan had already played twice on the same pitch and knew the conditions well, making the abandonment even more disappointing.

"We would be happy if five or six overs were played on this ground instead of the match being abandoned. Our team is so good, even in the short format. We just wanted to play the match so that there was a chance."

Fans Criticize Organizers Over Ground Management

@Ajmalzadran18: "Absolute incompetence by the Asian Games organizers! They don’t even have proper equipment to dry the outfield in 2026. Because of their poor ground management, the match was abandoned and Afghan Abdalyan is out. Why host such big events when you can’t even manage a wet field?"@Crictologist: "So Afghanistan and Hong Kong both got knocked out from Asian Games without even playing the Quarter Finals. Shame!! I thought the pitch was good enough for both teams but rain ruined it all."@Rajiv1841: "India vs Afghanistan QF is abandoned due to rain. They abandoned the game even 40 minutes before its scheduled start time. This has to be some joke!"@Amitsinha4444: "Non-cricket country hosting it with no idea how to prepare for cricket matches. Remember the outfield in India vs Japan? It was worse than an International test match."@doc_hormone: "What’s happening in Asian Games cricket? All matches abandoned."Poor Preparation Overshadows Uncontrollable WeatherWhile rain cannot be controlled, many argue the real failure lies in the lack of preparation. With Nagoya’s rainy forecast available well in advance, organizers had the opportunity to bring covers, drying machines, or super soakers but apparently did not.

The semi-finals progressing without a single ball bowled leaves a hollow feeling for players and supporters. The cricket competition at the Asian Games demands better planning if the sport’s place in future editions is to be secured.
