Aston Villa Targets Johan Manzambi Amid Newcastle Interest

Aston Villa are pushing hard to land Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi, muscling in on a move Newcastle United thought they had under control.

Newcastle had looked well placed to get the deal done, with a fee of around £50m in play. The interest from elsewhere was no secret, though, and BBC Sport had already reported a note of caution inside St James’ Park as other clubs circled. That caution now risks turning into another missed opportunity.

Another target slipping away

For Newcastle, this has a familiar sting. Only a few weeks ago, Victor Munoz slipped through their fingers and headed to Liverpool instead. Now Manzambi could follow the same path, only this time towards Villa Park.

The recruitment department cannot be accused of lacking imagination or reach. Over the past year, Newcastle have gone after Manzambi, Munoz, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, Benjamin Sesko and James Trafford. The names are smart, the profiles fit, the ambition is clear.

The problem is simple: too many of those names are ending up somewhere else.

Losing Manzambi to Villa would not just be another line on a list of near-misses. It would be a direct blow in a market where rivals are accelerating, and where every delay hands momentum to someone else.

Can Newcastle pivot again?

If this deal does slip away, the next move becomes critical. The club managed to reset quickly after Munoz chose Liverpool, turning their attention to Bazoumana Toure. That kind of sharp, discreet pivot will be needed again if Villa close this one out.

There is time left in the window. Enough time to find another midfielder, to strengthen other areas, to keep building the squad the way the hierarchy envisages.

But the clock is not the only pressure. The workload is heavy, the targets are ambitious, and the margin for another high-profile setback is shrinking fast.

On Monday, as the players not involved at the World Cup reported back for pre-season, the picture sharpened. The returning squad offered a clear reminder of where the gaps still lie, and how much hinges on getting the next few weeks right.

Newcastle know the talent is out there. The question now is whether they can stop watching it walk away.
