Aston Villa Nears Signing of Leon Goretzka on Free Transfer

Aston Villa are closing in on a statement midfield signing, with Germany international Leon Goretzka on the verge of joining on a free transfer.

The 31-year-old is available after leaving Bayern Munich in the summer and Villa have held positive talks with the midfielder as Unai Emery moves quickly to rebuild the heart of his team.

Emery turns to Goretzka after injury blow

Emery’s plans were shaken when Amadou Onana suffered a serious knee injury with Belgium at the World Cup, ruling the powerful midfielder out until next year. Villa needed experience, presence and pedigree in the centre of the pitch. Goretzka offers all three.

Villa had pushed to reunite him with a familiar face, targeting his former Bayern team-mate Joao Palhinha. That chase is set to end in disappointment, with Palhinha expected to join Benfica instead. The focus has swung fully to Goretzka.

And what a résumé he brings.

Over eight years at Bayern, Goretzka made 312 appearances and scored 51 goals, driving forward from midfield and delivering on the biggest stages. He collected seven Bundesliga titles and lifted the Champions League in 2020, becoming part of the club’s modern core.

On the international stage, he has 73 caps for Germany and featured three times at this summer’s World Cup, reinforcing his status as a seasoned operator at the very top level.

Villa’s summer exodus

His arrival would inject experience into a squad that has been stripped of several key names in a turbulent summer at Villa Park.

  • Ezri Konsa departed for Arsenal on Friday in a deal worth an initial £51m.
  • Morgan Rogers followed the money to Chelsea for £117m.
  • Youri Tielemans left for Manchester United in July.
  • Lucas Digne has already gone back to Paris St-Germain.

Established players, big characters, gone. Emery needs leaders as much as he needs legs. Goretzka ticks both boxes.

Watkins uncertainty lingers

The uncertainty does not end there. Even Ollie Watkins’ future remains up in the air, with Al-Hilal circling and the England striker’s position far from settled.

Emery did not hide the reality of the situation when asked on Friday.

"We have an issue with him, it's clear. He is our player. We have had offers for him.

"I don't want to sell him but it can change because if it's a good option for him and the club and I can replace him in the squad, this is the routine we have and we did before with the players who are leaving."

It is a blunt assessment and a reminder of the shifting landscape at Villa Park. Nobody is entirely untouchable if the numbers add up and replacements are lined up.

That is why the Goretzka move matters. Villa are not just patching holes; they are trying to prove they can still attract elite talent in the middle of a rebuild. If the deal is completed, a Champions League winner will walk into a dressing room in flux.

The question now is simple: will Goretzka’s arrival be the anchor for Emery’s next evolution, or just the first big name in a very different-looking Villa side by the time the window closes?
