Julian Alvarez Transfer Saga: Arteta's Direct Approach to Signing
Julian Alvarez remains right at the top of Arsenal’s attacking wishlist – and the chase has moved up a gear.
In Spain, reports claim Mikel Arteta has personally spoken with the Atletico Madrid forward about a move to the Emirates Stadium. The Arsenal manager is said to have made direct contact with the Argentine as he looks to add one more major piece to his squad.
The mood around Alvarez in Madrid has clearly shifted. He was left out of Atletico’s La Liga opener against Malaga, with Diego Simeone explaining that the striker was not in the right frame of mind to play. From there, the speculation only intensified.
Spanish outlets have suggested Alvarez is open to joining Arsenal, even if his ideal move would be to Barcelona. Atletico, though, are understood to be reluctant to strengthen the Catalan club, keeping the door to north London firmly ajar.
The tension around his future spilled onto the pitch – or rather, off it. Alvarez was whistled by sections of his own support during Atletico’s first league game of the season, a pointed reaction to the ongoing uncertainty.
Pressed on the forward’s situation after that hostile reception, Simeone chose his words carefully. “We always aim to secure the best possible tools, just as we’ve always had,” he said. “And, well, let’s hope we can assemble the best possible squad between now and the deadline.”
Arsenal’s summer so far
While the Alvarez story rumbles on, Arsenal’s recruitment drive has already been aggressive.
Ezri Konsa became the latest arrival, completing a £51million switch from Aston Villa to reinforce a defence that Arteta insists still lacks numbers. The club’s headline signing, though, is Bruno Guimaraes. The £75m capture of the Newcastle United captain has reshaped the heart of Arsenal’s midfield.
Those two deals followed earlier moves for Piero Hincapie and Christos Tzolis. Hincapie joined permanently from Bayer Leverkusen after last season’s loan spell at the Emirates Stadium, giving Arteta another left-sided defensive option.
Arteta has been clear: he does not see the window as closed.
Speaking before Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Coventry City in the opening match of their Premier League title defence, he underlined the need for more depth at the back when asked about Konsa’s arrival.
“We needed one more player, we had seven players in the defensive line, we know that that's not enough,” Arteta said. “We have two long-term injuries, one with Jurrien (Timber), and one with Willy (Saliba).
“And we wanted someone that didn't have the qualities that we already have, so somebody ideally with experience, because as a centre-back in this league you cannot play jokes, we know how important that position is, and I think Ezri brings a lot of qualities that we needed.”
A strong start, and a missing piece?
On the pitch, Arsenal have begun like champions. Goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard delivered a routine 3-0 victory over Coventry at the Emirates, a statement of control rather than chaos.
The squad looks deeper, the spine stronger, the confidence obvious. Yet the pursuit of Alvarez tells its own story. Arteta still sees room – and need – for one more big attacking weapon.
If Atletico keep the Camp Nou door shut, does that push Alvarez towards north London and a title defence under floodlights at the Emirates?
