Monaco's New Era Under Filipe Luís: Ligue 1 Challenge

AS Monaco’s new era under Filipe Luís hits its first Ligue 1 checkpoint on the road, with a tricky opening trip to Le Havre AC.

It will be only the Brazilian’s second competitive match in charge of the Principality side, but the pace of his start has been relentless. On Thursday, Monaco were already in knockout mode, edging Górnik Zabrze 3-2 in the first leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League playoff. Now they have to flip straight into domestic gear, away from home, with a patched‑up squad.

Luís starts life under constraint

If Luís wanted a gentle introduction, he isn’t getting one. His options are already heavily trimmed.

Christian Mawissa is suspended. Jordan Teze, Ansu Fati and new arrival Mattias Abline are all sidelined through injury. On top of that, two of Monaco’s key attacking figures, Takumi Minamino and Folarin Balogun, have been left out of the squad to be rested after Thursday’s European exertions.

So Monaco travel light. Not in ambition, but in bodies.

The situation hands opportunities to some of the club’s newer faces, and Luís has little choice but to lean into the freshness.

New faces, new spine

Manchester City loanee Mathys Detourbet is set for his second start in Monaco colours after featuring in midweek. The young midfielder will again be asked to bring energy and control at the heart of Luís’s system, a demanding role for a player still learning his surroundings.

Alongside him, centre-back Sadibou Sané, signed from Metz this summer, should also keep his place after his own European debut. Luís is effectively building a new defensive axis on the fly, and doing it under competitive pressure.

There is change on the flank too. Flávio Nazinho, recruited from Cercle Brugge, is in line for his first competitive start at left-back for Monaco. The trip to Le Havre will be his introduction to the sharp end of French top-flight football in Monaco colours, away from the relative comfort of pre-season and cameos.

How Monaco are expected to line up

Despite the absentees, the likely XI still carries quality and a clear structure. Monaco are expected to shape up as follows against Le Havre:

Lukas Hradecky; Flávio Nazinho, Eric Dier, Sadibou Sané, Vanderson; Mathys Detourbet, Lamine Camara, Denis Zakaria, Mamadou Coulibaly; Mika Biereth, Aleksandr Golovin.

It’s a side that blends experience and youth, with Hradecky’s authority in goal, Dier’s know-how at the back, Zakaria’s steel in midfield and Golovin’s craft in the final third. Around them, Luís is betting on legs, intensity and the hunger of players eager to nail down a place.

The schedule is already testing the depth of this squad. The question now is whether this improvised, early-season version of Monaco can set the tone for a campaign that will demand both rotation and resilience.
