Mbokazi’s Possible Return Boosts Chicago Fire’s Playoff Hopes
Chicago Fire defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi could yet have a say in the MLS Cup Playoffs, with coach Gregg Berhalter revealing the All-Star centre-back may return before the end of the season.
Back in late July, when Mbokazi tore a thigh muscle, the outlook was bleak. The initial diagnosis pointed to a year-ending blow for one of Chicago’s standout performers, a player many had already pencilled out of both club and international duty for the rest of the calendar year.
That script is changing.
Speaking after the Fire’s 1-1 draw away to New York Red Bulls, Berhalter rowed back on his earlier assessment of the injury.
“I think the information I gave that he’s definitely out for the season was premature,” the Fire coach admitted. “He’s in a rehab program now and he’s progressing. There’s no exact timeframe for when he’s going to be back, but there is a possibility it is before the end of the season.”
For Chicago, that possibility is enormous.
Before the injury, Mbokazi had been a rock in the Fire back line, a constant presence and a key reason their defensive numbers had stabilised. His form earned him a spot in the MLS All Star game, confirmation of his rapid rise from promising prospect to one of the league’s most talked-about young defenders.
He carried that momentum onto the biggest stage of all. At the World Cup, Mbokazi was central to Bafana’s historic run, helping them reach the knockout phase for the first time. His composure, timing in the tackle, and authority under pressure marked him out as one of the breakout stars of the tournament.
Then came the tear, and with it the sense that his year had been cut in half just as it was taking off.
Now the rehab work has opened a narrow window. If his recovery continues at the current pace, Mbokazi could be back in contention just as the MLS Cup Playoffs get under way in late November, a potential late-season reinforcement that few opponents will relish.
The timing, though, offers no comfort to his national team.
Bafana face two crucial AFCON qualifiers against Kenya on November 11 and 15. Even with the more optimistic schedule, Mbokazi is expected to be targeting a return to Chicago’s matchday squad only days after those fixtures. That makes an international comeback in those games highly unlikely and leaves the national side without one of their emerging leaders in defence at a pivotal moment.
For the Fire, the equation is simpler. If Mbokazi completes his recovery on this revised timeline, they don’t just get a body back. They regain an All-Star defender, a World Cup-tested presence, and a player whose season suddenly has a second act.
