Newcastle's Captain Dan Burn to Miss Premier League Opener

Newcastle’s new era under Matthias Jaissle has been jolted before a ball is even kicked, with captain Dan Burn set to miss the start of the Premier League season after suffering an ankle injury in training.

The 34-year-old defender, only recently handed the armband following Bruno Guimaraes’ departure, is expected to be sidelined after rolling his ankle, according to The Athletic. The setback comes just hours before Newcastle open their campaign against Liverpool at St James’ Park this afternoon.

For Jaissle, it is a brutal early test. Tasked with reshaping a squad that has undergone major summer changes, the German coach had identified Burn as a cornerstone of his new-look side – not just at the back, but in the dressing room. Burn’s leadership was meant to anchor a group still learning a new style and new demands.

Instead, Newcastle go into their first game of the season short of senior voices on the pitch, and without the man chosen to lead them into this next chapter. Burn has grown into a key figure since arriving in 2022, a reliable presence in defence and a crowd favourite on Tyneside. His promotion to captain earlier this month underlined his status as one of the club’s standard-bearers.

Now Jaissle must rethink his plans on the fly. Defensive reshuffles, a new captain on the day, and a recalibrated leadership group will all have to be settled before Liverpool arrive – and they, too, begin under fresh management with Andoni Iraola in the opposite dugout.

The sense of change around St James’ Park was already strong. A new head coach, a squad in transition, a different way of playing. Burn was supposed to be the constant through it all.

Kick-off is at 4:30pm. Newcastle will walk out without their new captain, but with the same expectation from the stands: start this new campaign with three points, setback or not.
