Aston Villa Signs Aaron Wan-Bissaka on Loan from West Ham
Aston Villa have secured the loan signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham, landing the DR Congo right-back on a season-long deal that carries a conditional obligation to buy.
The structure of the agreement is deliberately opaque. West Ham had been holding out for around £25m from suitors, and while the exact triggers remain undisclosed, the obligation to buy will only kick in under certain conditions written into the deal.
Villa know this type of move well. Last year they took Harvey Elliott from Liverpool on a similar season-long loan, that time with an obligation to buy set at £35m. That transfer never activated. Elliott needed to hit 10 league appearances; he managed only four and went back to Anfield this summer. Villa will be wary of that precedent, and so will Wan-Bissaka.
The 28-year-old missed West Ham’s first two Championship fixtures while talks with Villa intensified, a clear sign that a return to the Premier League was edging closer. Now it’s done, he steps back into the top flight with a point to prove after a bruising campaign.
Wan-Bissaka joined West Ham from Manchester United in 2024 on a seven-year contract, arriving as a marquee defensive signing tasked with shoring up the right flank. He has since made 65 appearances for the Hammers, 25 of them coming last season as the club slid out of the Premier League and into the Championship.
Before that, he built his reputation at Old Trafford. Across 190 games for Manchester United, Wan-Bissaka collected major silverware, lifting the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. His defensive instincts and one‑v‑one prowess made him a mainstay through multiple managers.
His form has also carried onto the international stage. Wan-Bissaka started all four of DR Congo’s matches at the 2026 World Cup, helping them battle their way into the round of 32 and underlining his status as a dependable presence on the biggest stage.
Now comes the next chapter. A season at Villa, a conditional buy clause looming in the background, and a defender who knows that every tackle, every appearance, could decide where he calls home beyond this year.
