Aston Villa Signs Joao Gomes for £38m

Aston Villa have underlined their growing ambition with the £38m capture of Joao Gomes from Wolves, prising one of the Premier League’s most combative midfielders out of a relegated side and into a squad being rebuilt at pace.

The Brazil international arrives for an initial £34m, with a further £4m in add-ons, after Villa saw off interest from Atletico Madrid. The Spanish club had circled for weeks, but once Villa moved decisively, the deal accelerated. Gomes left Wolves’ training camp in Portugal on Thursday, flew out for his medical, and by the time the squad reassembled, he was Villa’s latest statement signing.

This is not a one-off splash. It is part of a clear, expensive reshaping of Villa’s midfield.

On Friday, the club broke their transfer record to land Freiburg’s Switzerland international Johan Manzambi in a deal worth more than £50m, beating Newcastle to his signature. Now Gomes joins him, adding steel, energy and a relentless edge to the centre of the pitch.

The timing is no coincidence. Villa have lost Amadou Onana to a serious knee injury suffered with Belgium at the World Cup, an absence that will rule him out until next year. Morgan Rogers is also heading for the exit, with Villa having agreed a £117m deal with Chelsea that will reshape their finances and, in turn, their recruitment options.

Gomes fits the profile of what they want to build: prime age, proven in England, and hungry.

He was one of the few bright sparks in a bleak season for Wolves, making 41 appearances as they finished bottom of the Premier League. Across his time at Molineux, he played 130 games and scored seven goals after arriving from Flamengo in 2023, quickly establishing himself as a fan favourite for his aggression off the ball and his willingness to take responsibility on it.

Now he swaps a survival fight for European aspirations. From a training camp in Portugal with a club staring at the Championship, to Villa Park and a midfield suddenly worth well over £100m, Gomes’ trajectory has shifted sharply.

Villa have paid heavily to make that happen. The question now is how far this rebuilt engine room can drive them.
