Aston Villa Break Transfer Record for Johan Manzambi
Aston Villa have made their biggest statement of the summer – and in their history – by signing Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for just over £50m.
The fee edges past the £50m Villa paid Everton for Amadou Onana two years ago and underlines how far the club are prepared to go to arm Unai Emery for another tilt at major honours.
Beating Newcastle to the punch
This deal did not always look like a Villa story. Manzambi was on the brink of joining Newcastle only last week after the Magpies agreed terms with Freiburg. The path seemed clear. Then Villa moved.
The Birmingham club accelerated talks, matched the financial demands and, crucially, Manzambi chose Villa Park as his preferred destination. A Champions League-level project under Emery, a squad already stacked with quality, and a manager with a track record of improving young players – the pull was obvious.
At 20, Manzambi already carries the aura of a player built for the big stage. He scored three times for Switzerland at the World Cup as they powered into the quarter-finals before falling to Argentina. On the biggest international platform, he did not shrink.
From Istanbul opponent to Villa cornerstone
Villa know exactly what they are getting – they have suffered on the same pitch as him.
In May, Manzambi lined up against Emery’s side in the Europa League final in Istanbul. Villa ran out 3-0 winners to end a 30-year wait for a major trophy, but the Freiburg midfielder still left a strong impression on the night with his energy, range and fearlessness in possession.
Across the season, he was one of the standout young players in Europe. Named Europa League Young Player of the Season, he scored seven goals in 47 appearances in all competitions as Freiburg finished seventh in the Bundesliga. Now, instead of trying to contain him, Villa will build around him.
Midfield rebuild in full swing

Villa’s midfield has been ripped open over the summer and through injury. Youri Tielemans has gone, sold to Manchester United for £35m after the Premier League side triggered his release clause. Onana, the previous record buy and a key pillar in Emery’s structure, is out until next year after suffering a serious knee injury with Belgium at the World Cup.
Those two exits – one temporary, one permanent – left a glaring gap in the heart of the side. Manzambi arrives to help fill it, bringing legs, goals and a willingness to carry the ball through the thirds.
And the rebuild is not stopping there. Villa are closing in on a £38m move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes. The Brazilian left the Championship club’s training camp in Portugal on Thursday to undergo a medical, a clear sign that the deal is at an advanced stage.
If and when Gomes signs, Emery will have a retooled engine room: younger, more dynamic, and built to press and dominate rather than simply survive.
Walking the financial tightrope
All of this comes with a hard edge of reality. Villa are operating under the close watch of Uefa’s financial regulations and know they cannot simply spend without consequence.
Sales and exits are part of the equation. Tielemans’ move to United brings in a sizeable fee. Left-back Lucas Digne is close to rejoining Paris St-Germain, another high earner likely to depart as the club trims its wage bill and balances the books.
The message is clear: Villa are not reckless. They are calculated. Big money goes out, but big money comes in. The squad evolves while the club stays within the lines.
