Atlético Madrid Nears Cristian Romero Transfer as Simeone's Defense Rebuild Begins

Atlético Madrid are moving to the sharp end of one of their defining operations of the summer: bringing Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur to the Metropolitano.

Negotiations, long and tense, are now in their final stretch. Journalist Pedro Fullana revealed on "El Larguero" that the move stems from a direct request by Diego Simeone himself. Not a suggestion. A demand. The Argentine coach wants his compatriot at the heart of a defence that lost its old snarl last season and never quite recovered it.

Simeone has rarely hidden his frustration with Atlético’s fragility at the back. Too many soft goals, too many lost duels in areas where his teams once ruled. Romero, aggressive, front-foot and unafraid of a fight, fits the profile of a centre-back designed in Simeone’s image.

Tottenham, for their part, have not made it easy. Talks dragged for weeks as the English club held firm on their valuation and Atlético searched for financial room. The stalemate has begun to crack in the last few hours. Inside the club, there is growing confidence that the deal will be closed for under 40 million euros, a figure they see as a calculated gamble for a defender in his prime.

Reshaping the Squad

To make it happen, Atlético are reshaping the squad. Sales will underwrite the move. The plan is clear: around 20 million euros are expected from Nahuel Molina, another 20 million from Matteo Ruggeri, and a further 10 million from Thiago Almada’s transfer to River Plate. Those exits are not just collateral; they are the financial backbone of Simeone’s defensive reset.

While the clubs argue over the final numbers, Romero has already chosen his path. The Argentine is pushing from his side to smooth the transfer and has made his intentions unmistakable. He wants to play in red and white next season. Every other offer has been turned away as he waits for Tottenham and Atlético to finally align.

Now it comes down to the last details. If Atlético close this, Simeone will have his enforcer. And a defence that suddenly looks ready to fight on his terms again.
