Barcelona’s summer attacking plan is changing shape, and fast.
What began as a pursuit of marquee No. 9s is now veering towards a different kind of signing: a wide forward who can bend a system to his will. According to SPORT, the Catalan club have practically reached an agreement to bring Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United to the Olympic Stadium, a move that would mark a sharp tactical and strategic turn.
From dream No. 9s to a flexible forward
Inside the club, the early blueprint was clear. Julian Alvarez and Joao Pedro sat at the top of the list as the preferred long-term heirs to Robert Lewandowski. A pure striker, high ceiling, big statement. That was the idea.
Then reality bit.
Both operations have become extremely complicated for different reasons, and the optimism around landing either player has evaporated. Costs, conditions, availability – the kind of obstacles that don’t just slow a deal, they kill it. Faced with that, Barcelona’s sporting department has been forced to redraw the map.
Into that space steps Gordon.
One signing, several solutions
What attracts Barcelona is not just Gordon’s talent, but what he unlocks. The England international can start wide on the left, stretch the pitch, and attack full-backs. He can also slide inside and operate as a false nine, offering Hansi Flick a very different attacking structure without requiring a second major transfer.
Inside the club, the idea is simple: one player, two roles.
SPORT’s report frames it as a way to “kill two birds with one stone” – cover the left flank and provide an alternative through the middle, then search for a more affordable, specialised striker later in the market if the right opportunity appears. For months, the main objective had been clear: find a long-term replacement for Lewandowski, a classic reference point up front. But the market has shifted the conversation. Instead of forcing a blockbuster No. 9 signing at any cost, Barcelona are leaning towards a more adaptable, layered solution.
Timing, contacts and price
This is not a deal that came out of nowhere. Gordon’s camp had already made contact with Barcelona weeks ago. At that stage, the proposal sat on the table, interesting but not urgent. The club were still focused on their two primary striker targets.
Now the picture is different.
With Alvarez and Joao Pedro effectively out of reach, the Gordon option has moved from background noise to front and centre. SPORT report that Barcelona believe they can land the Newcastle forward for under €70 million – a fee the club views as strong value given his age, versatility and profile, even if no final green light has been given yet.
Crucially, Gordon and his entourage see a genuine opportunity in Catalonia. They believe he can secure regular minutes, not just as a rotation piece but as a central figure in Flick’s attacking plans. That alignment of ambition on both sides gives the operation an extra push.
Less glamour, more logic?
No one at Barcelona would pretend Gordon carries the same immediate glamour as a signing like Alvarez. He is not a classic Galáctico-style headline. He is, however, something else: a player who fits the current constraints and needs of a squad in transition.
Under these circumstances, that might be the smarter play.
If Barcelona do close this deal, they will not be unveiling the archetypal Lewandowski successor. They will be betting on mobility, versatility and system flexibility over a pure penalty-box predator.
In a summer defined by financial limits and hard choices, that kind of calculated gamble could end up shaping not just next season’s front line, but the entire direction of the club’s rebuild.
