WBC Orders Unification Bout Between William Zepeda and Jadier Herrera

The World Boxing Council (WBC) has made a rare move by ordering a title consolidation in the lightweight division, matching reigning champion William Zepeda against interim titleholder Jadier Herrera. Both fighters have been given a deadline until October 20th to finalize an agreement for the bout.

Herrera, who remains undefeated with a record of 18-0 including 16 knockouts, earned his interim belt after stepping in during Shakur Stevenson's move up in weight. He took advantage of the opportunity by overpowering veteran Ricardo Nunez decisively for the interim crown. The WBC had previously stripped Stevenson of his title due to unpaid sanctioning fees, which opened up the situation for Herrera.

Instead of elevating Herrera to full champion status or arranging a vacant title fight, the WBC allowed Zepeda (34-1, 27 KOs) to claim the official championship by defeating Lamont Roach Jr this past August. Zepeda stands as a formidable opponent in the post-Stevenson lightweight scene, despite controversy surrounding his previous performances, including a disqualification loss to Jon Fernandez.

With both fighters and promoter Frank Warren eager for the matchup, this unification bout seems likely unless Zepeda pursues a unification fight with Abdullah Mason or decides to vacate the title following recent trends. The path points toward Herrera finally getting his chance at the undisputed lightweight crown.
